There\'s more to life than ranking

I look at the scores rather amusedly. A couple of my Cryx bone turkeys which were identical in every way got scores with about a half a point spread on them, so while I like to see roughly where my minis fall in the scoring, i haven\'t threatened to take my pictures and go home over anything

Well even tho I dont really care about the score (its playing the game that counts after all) it does give me something to strive for. I mean I wanted to crack 500 before XMAS but that wont happen but at least I did improve my painting enought o feel confident to enter a GD. So maybe score isnt everything but tell that to someone who plays sport.

We\'re human we cant help but compete. so congrats for hitting 3000 you earned it, now get out of the forums and go paint some minis 2000 beckons.

Unfortunately, I have no-one around here who shares the interest. I lost touch with all my old schoolmates who used to be into the hobby (it has been a long, long time) and get very strange looks from my work colleagues if I mention my hobby (let alone scream with excitement when my latest ebay purchse arrives at the office). My only option would be to frequent my local GW and hang out with the \"kids\" but that just makes me feel uncomfortable. For me \'tis a lonely pursuit and CMON is the only place where I can discuss minis with \"like-minded\" individuals and get feedback and support. This also makes it hard for me to develop new techniques as there\'s only so much I can get by reading and have no-one to show me how things like blending and proper paint consistency etc really work :(

I can\'t comment on the whole vote/comment thing because I\'m still yet to post some of my painted minis here. Actually, it\'s more a case of still yet to finish painting some minis to post here.

Anyway, I think thats it\'s not all that uncommon not to know any other people who paint minis. It\'s a shame because I have all this pent up miniature stuff that I need someone to vent it out on. Oh well. I guess if I was really really serious about miniature painting I would seek out great painters and learn from them. For example I seriously considered flying over to Germany to take part in Jeremie B\'s one week painting workshop. After weighing this decision up for over a week I thought that it\'d be a waste to travel to a cool country like Germany and spend the majority of my time couped up painting a miniature. Instead, I\'ve decided to go to America and get a guitar lesson with my hero Ronnie Earl. This is a little dream of mine. Having made this decision I\'d still like to take part in one of Jeremie\'s painting workshops in the future.

I\'m also very isolated from miniature people-----I don\'t know any miniature painters. Also, you can\'t buy miniatures in Taiwan.

I\'d like to add that I don\'t agree with the idea that you can only learn a limited amount from reading articles and not having other painters around to give you tips and advice. While this would certainly help I still believe that some of the best painters are completely self-taught and have learnt the majority of their skills through much practice.

>edit< I\'m angling for sympathy her but the other night I called my girlfriend over and asked her to have a look at my work in progress. Her reply was that she has no interest in miniatures and therefore she didn\'t wan\'t to take a look at my WIP. Ohhh :(

Ok, I can take a hint ;)

@laurence - It\'s all about preferred learning styles. Some people (and I\'m definitely one of them) find it very difficult to do [redneck accent] that fancy book-learnin\' [/redneck accent] and pick things up a lot quicker from seeing and doing. Others find reading and researching easier than watching and doing - it\'s just one of those quirks of human nature that helps to make us all individuals.

I\'m dying for someone else who paints to move into the NH area. I see people at the local gaming shop, but usually no one who does anything that I really want to pick their brains about. Ah well....

@laurence I feel you might want to ditch the girlfriend...I can not imagine not wanting to see a loved ones creation ...even if I did not partake or enjoy the hobby, its still your work and at a minimum should be gazed upon

Posting a reply.

Sorry guys---I\'ve been neglecting to reply in this thread.

Hi Billy (apologies for shortning your CMoN name) yeah I totally agree with you on the whole idea that different people learn differently. That whole multiple intelligences theory is very true. Also to have other miniature painters giving direct advice to you and actually sitting down with you and demonstrating painting techniques right before your eyes would have to give your painting a big boost. I\'m going to have to just plod away at my own pace for now. Just to give you an idea of my pace, think of snail in slow-motion or hair growing. Hah.

Hi TAB Studio, you\'ve got a fair point and I agree that our companions should show an interest in the things we get passionate about. In context to the timing I think my girlfriend was very tired when I asked her to take a look at my half-painted miniature (WIP). Usually she comes over and takes a peek. She\'s even made comments to me like, \"you\'re so great\", and \"wow, you\'re so talented\", etc, etc, etc. Shall I go on a little more with the kinds of comments she\'s made to me to encourage what i\'m doing. :) I must say that I didn\'t enjoy her comment that I hold miniature painting as being more important than her and our relationship. I\'d be a sad soul indeed if I didn\'t have my beautiful girlfriend! Anyway, enough of this soppy stuff!

BTW, this may sound rediculous but I\'m still working on my WOH mini to donate. So please expect to receive a mini in the mail in the not too distant future.

Cheers guys.

Happy painting!

Hmm, my GF (~6 mo.) has zero interest in what I paint, she doesn\'t mind it or anything but I have yet to hear a \"how\'s the painting going\" or \"what are you working on now?\" out of her. I think she just sees it as one of the things I do that she doesn\'t, after all she has never said anything disrespectful about how I spend my liesure time. I don\'t expect her to shower me with adulation for my \"great talent\" or anything, but sometimes I worry that if we ever move in together etc. it could become an issue if I want to spend significant time painting.

I\'ve considered painting something for her... but I don\'t want to spend ages on a piece only to have it end up in her tchotchke drawer getting chipped up because it doesn\'t interest her...

Well, paint something else and get back into the 2000\'s!

I\'ve certainly taken some satisfaction in breaking the 3000 and 2000 barriers. Irregardless of all the \"scores don\'t matter\" cries, it shows an improvement of technique for your best work to go from 5\'s to 6\'s to 7\'s, etc. Every time I paint something that raises my cmon ranking average it tickles me pink!

Ranking and scores are the carrot! We must pursue the carrot!

lol, \"tchotchke drawer\"
