Cool set,we have some Asterix chess sets in an art shop near me....they\'re rubbish though!

These are cool. I have a friend that collects chess sets, so will have to forward this to him.
Hmmm... the Gauls are pretty nice! There\'s alot of oher good stuff on that site, too, was just today looking at some of their historical figures in a local modelling shop. Very nice stuff. I\'ll have to try one of these.

I had been planning to make up two armies out of Rackham minis, but that would be too daunting a task (for me anyway) and this set looks like it is at least feasible...maybe
As for cost once again, I don\'t think you would be able to purchase the necessary pieces to make a chess set from any major manufacturer without spending more than this set costs.

Now look what you\'ve all gone and done. I\'ve been busy researching the history of chess pieces when I should be working.
So, why isn\'t the bishop a bishop.
Suggestion - Italian word for it is different?
Well I haven\'t found the italian word for the bishop piece, but as Finn pointed out, the rook is a rook (corvus frugilegus) which in Italian is torre. So, since they based that piece on the English name for the chess piece instead of the Italian (Rocca - fortress) then they probably are considering all pieces by their English names (if they\'d used french, as pointed out, he would be a jester or fool, still perfectly in keeping with the medieval theme).
What I have found is that the original name for what we call the bishop was \"the elephant.\"
So my guess is that they didn\'t do any research and didn\'t want to offend the church (which is big in Italy you may have guessed) so they just made him an unmounted knight - which I suppose makes some sense since bishop and knight peices are considered to be nearly equal in value.

(Italian name -- literal translation -- English name)
Torre -- tower -- (the rook)
Cavallo -- horse -- (the knight)
Alfiere -- standard bearer -- (the bishop)
Regina -- queen -- (the queen)
Rè -- king -- (the king)
Pedone -- infantrymen -- (the pawn)
Never noticed the difference from Italian and English names before this thread
