Thick Skin

I just saw this ( http://www.coolminiornot.com/artist/Jardacka ) d00ds gallery today.
Well what was left of it. Poor d00d! You really do need thick skin around here.

Good one Mr Travolta!

Investigate young Jim, investigate! He got very low scores and some hard truths from Tony Manero. Straight down the line lol

It\'s nice to see what a supportive environment CMON has become. So what if he got his colours wrong, or flock on the base??? He could just be a kid trying this for the first time and judging by his write-ups with his pics, he\'s very into his models. Lets hope that his missing pics are as a result of a problem with photobucket and not because he pulled them after receiving such harsh comment.

Thick skin or not - Tony\'s comments were unhelpful :(

It\'s the fickle world of opinions..
While Tony\'s critiqu may have seemed harsh at least he said the honest truth and said what was wrong with the model..
Honesty is by far the best policy ..True it may be a little offputting for a first timer but criticism is often the best teacher no matter how harsh..
At least posting comments along with the vote is better than just posting 1 and the poor lad sat wondering why his average is so low..

Also this is a lot better than voting ten because \"he his my friend..\"

Another approach to critique.

Tony M Quote: 5 basic vote -1 for blotchy paint, -1 for messed up color zones -1 for flock on the base edge -1 for unthinned colours

Text

1 for blotchy paint>>> I advice you try thinning your paints down with a little water. This will certainly help the paint on your minis look a lot smoother. You may want to try using a pallete rather than diiping your brushes into the paint pot which I\'m presuming you\'re doing. Don\'t worry! We all do that when we start out.

1 for messed up colour zones>>> ??? Blacklining is a good way to define borders between different areas and colours on your mini. Here are some useful articles on this subject: blah blah blah.

1 for flock on the base edge>>> A little more effort on your base would surely ensure a higher score for you. Check out these links d00d: blah blah blah.

1 for unthinned colours>>> ??? (What\'s thinning thinks the beginner???) There are a number of ways you can thin your paints for a smoother coverage on your mini. Here are some more articles: blah blah blah.

OH, and I\'m a great believer in a little encouragement from time to time!! You\'ll be so surprised how far a little bit of encouragement can go.

So why not add something like: Having said all of that, I like the colours you\'ve chosen and believe with a bit of practise you\'ll improve a lot. Who knows? I may have to hand my Demon over to you one day. Keep posting d00d...

Wouldn\'t this have being a little more constructive Mr Manero. ???

I think that it\'s one thing to offer an opinion and another thing to be blatently bitter harsh to someone.

I agree, I am not complaining about the comments I just think they could have been put in much better way. It is always good to be honest, but as you say Laurence, there is a constructive way to voice your comments and the text you added in your post presents the critique in a much friendlier and positive way :)

I agree with laurence totally..

The tone and the way it\'s described by Tony was harsh and rude... And frankly, that is not what this place should be about...

Rating: 2
thin MORE your colours and shade them

Another comment... not only gramatically incorrect, but for a newb at painting, this means nothing at all...

If you don\'t have any comments that are constructive... don\'t comment at all!

Most likely, the comments made this guy delete his pictures, quit CMON and maybe give up painting... well done... :flame:

Just commenting the way Tony Manero has here is completely unhelpful, and quite likely to just lead to hurt feelings. Criticism should always be constructive, like the example Laurence has given, and you should always say something positive. Specially when you\'re dealing with someone new to the hobby who is in all likelihood a kid. You can\'t talk to kids and newbies the way you talk to golden demon winners!

If you\'re not going to say something helpful, than don\'t say anything at all, in my opinion.

These hot-headed latin types - they don\'t do subtlety lol

It was OTT certainly. Thing is, he\'s doing well as a painter and he thinks he\'s the bees-knees does old Manero :innocent:

Normally good value for it though, fair play.

I agree. Those scores are clearly too low, and can only be designed to cause offence.

some painters just have a hard time accepting that not everyone is on the same level than others. I have long abandoned any hope for constructive criticism on coolminiornot. However this isn\'t even constructive, it\'s some dude with too much spare time and obviously something stuck up his butt who tries to take motivation away from younger or less experienced people in the hobby. Abit sad I must say :/

Well, all his pics are down now, so I can\'t even have a look at what they were like. The scores did seem ridiculously low though, 2s and 3s. From the thumbnails the minis looked fairly reasonable to me, at the very least tabletop standard - which is supposed to be a 5 isn\'t it?

I\'m talking to him now. He didn\'t seem so shook up by the ordeal, but more discuraged from keeping the pictures up.

He will be sending me some in a mail and I\'ll help him out a bit, get him back on track and hopefully make him post at some point again :D

Sometimes it\'s all too easy to hide behind the anonimity of the internet and and an online alias.
What we quite often forget is that behind the screen through which we view these works is a human being, with the possibility of a fragile ego.

Constructive criticsm is one thing, applied properly it will be gratefully received, destructive criticism however can only destroy.

I doubt whether comments like those provided by Mr Manero would have been dished out face to face. (At least it would not be twice within my hearing!)

If as I suspect this Jardarka is a young person with developing social skills, then the usual \"off-hand\" comment of Develop Thicker Skin is more than just blase, it\'s inconsiderate.

Dark Seraphim : Thank you for showing real consideration. Kudos and good luck to Jardarka.
