Thin paints with PVA?

Where do people get the idea to thin paints with PVA glue? That makes almost no sense to me. Maybe a drop or two to a cup of water? Surely not full strength?.

I know where I got the idea :) The PVA I had at one time dried quite matt so I first used it as an additive to try to get a more consistent matt finish with my artists\' acrylics.

I wouldn\'t recommend it as a general rule though because PVA remains soluble in water and you can have problems with lifting when applying further layers, plus it can make the paint a bit gloopy - that\'s a technical term ;) - and difficult to apply smoothly. It\'s worth trying for painting fine details though - add enough and you can brush away mistakes with a damp brush.

No, not full strength. But at about 1:3 with water, it considerably increases the surface tension of the paint.

I reckon it\'s most useful for getting paint to stay exactly where you put it, though. It reduces capillary action and causes the paint to gather. Fine lines of paint remain fine, and don\'t spread. Also used for washes, because of the gathering qualities.

As Einion noted, it remains water soluble after drying, and the surface can get a bit tacky if you paint over it again. Just let it dry thoroughly each time you go over it.
