Hi All,

I\'ll be visiting the States (from NZ) for a conference in July/August. I\'ll be 8 days in San Francisco, 5 in New York City and two in Nashville.

Are there any locals or others that have visited that have great things to do while in any of these places? Ive already penciled in the Museum of Modern Art (Salvador Dali exhibition  ) Any tips or suggestions would be great, its my first visit to the States and I want it to be a good \'un!

Hope you have a great trip! That\'s a nice selection of destinations too.

In San Francisco I\'d definitely make Fisherman\'s Wharf one stop to have some fresh seafood. And I\'d eat in Chinatown as much as possible, but then I\'m biased :)

Have to go onto the Golden Gate, don\'t you?!

I\'d probably skip Alcatraz, just aim to take nice pics of the island from the coast/bridge. San Francisco also has \'the windiest road in America\' (you\'ll have seen it in a number of movies) so that might be worth a short sidetrip and I think you could combine that with a ride on one or more cable cars which are a must-use IMO.

More tips from TripAdvisor, About.com, Mapwest and 10Best.

I\'ve never been to NY, but San Francisco is a great time. If you like art, the California Palace of the Legion of Honor is really a wonderful trip there. I would also suggest checking out Grace Cathedral; they have a mandala rug in the sanctuary that is a wow.

The Sony Metreon is a fun place to visit (shameless plug - my brother-in-law actually helped build it), and if you\'re really a nerd you can check out Gamescape, which is the biggest game store I have seen in the U.S.. You can google it if you want directions.

Oh, visit the Ghiradelli chocolate store. Tons of stuff that will make you gladly take years off your life.

When in New York, this is my advice:

1- When on Madison Ave., be sure to stop at one of the street vendor delis and get a hot pastrami on rye. They take pride in them.

2- Be sure to not wear any baseball jerseys. The New Yorkers are vehement fans, and if you wear the wrong team\'s jersey, they WILL pick fights with you. There\'s a dividing line for which team is popular where, but I can\'t remember where it is.

3- Times Square is only fun if you\'re under 20 or over 50. Take a few pictures and make sure your wallet is chained into your pocket. Better safe than sorry. It isn\'t as bad as rumours claim, but it isn\'t an Eden, either.

4- Don\'t waste your time with paying to go up the Empire State Building. There are taller buildings with better views. Take pictures of it from the outside.

5- Central Park is awesome in the daytime. I never went at night.

6- Walk down Broadway. You don\'t enjoy it half as well in a car or a cab.

That\'s all I can think of off the top of my head.

Been going to San Francisco since I was a wee little painter.

Fishremans Warf and Pier 39 - HUGE tourist trinket area. 99% waste of time. the 1% that is good in the area is Alioto\'s for the seafood, and Ghiridelli for the chocolate.

All of Golden Gate Park.

The De Young museum is in Golden Gate park. It\'s a must.

The Haight Ashbury for a sort of nostalgic look at ground zero for the whole hippie thing. Be ready to see a lot of stoned, strange/wierd people. DONT GO AT NIGHT! At the west end of Haight is a HUGE used/new CD store called Amoeba.

Union Square is nice to look at (sort of a tiny Trafalgar Square) and ritzy stores and hotels.

Going to Fort Point is OK - The tour is just around an old fort but it\'s a fantastic view of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Walk across the GG Bridge. It\'s about 1 1/2 miles EACH WAY so be ready.

Mark Twain said of SF - \'the coldest winter I ever experienced was a summer in SF\'. It can fluxuate WILDLY.

Piece of interesting trivia. The Marina District, on the far north side of SF, used to be the bay but after the 06 quake all the rubble from the quake/fire was shoved into the bay and that\'s what the Marina District is built on. Very expensive part of the city and didn\'t fair well during the quake of 89 due to the poor ground underneath it.

when in san fransisco, go to the san fransisco exploratorium. its a science mueseum. sounds weird, but its a pretty cool place. if you have time, go down to monterey and the aquarium there. star trek the voyage home was shot there so.... in new york, go to connecticut cause connecticut is way cooler than new york in every way. (not that im biased or anything)
