Thoughts on Alkemy by Kraken Editions?

I\'ve been looking at the Alkemy line by Kraken Editions for a little while now and I find them very appealing, especially the Khaliman Republic. What are people\'s thoughts re the quality of the minis and the game itself? (hey, I *might* be able to play it someday!) I was interested to see that they\'ve chosen plastic for the minis- is it like the GW plastics? There\'s a bit on their site saying how awesome it is, but then they would say that, wouldn\'t they? I\'m going to Essen Spiel next weekend and am seriously considering picking some up while there.

(Sorry if somebody already asked this.)

Personally I think the plastics are fantastic..
They come in individual little bags and components cut.. minimal clean up and straightforward assembly..

Game wise I\'m no real authority more opened the box and drooled at the minis ..
The mechanics do seem fairly complex but that is just a brief reading and some of the translation to English may have spoiled it a bit.. But as a range I have to say thumbs up from me...

I actually bought some of them off Jeremie when he was in San Diego. They are really clean casts in resin. Wonderful detail. I love them actually and plan on painting them up soon.

I have not played the game but I really like the minis. What is dissapointing is that most of the minis I like by Kraken are limited edition and can only be found at conventions where the game is being promoted and I do not have the time or money to go to the conventions. :~(

i didn´t play the game myself, but one of the owner of my local game store and theyre intern are pretty into it.

According tto them the basic rules are classic skirmish, with the little difference that you use the special colored dices that come with your faction box to roll the damage. Different attacks, both normal and magic are associated with a certain colour, as darker the colour as bigger the damage.

the real twist of the game is the way that magic is handled: in order to cast spells you need alchemistical incrediens your magician, witch, shaman has to collect on the battlefield. that means your very fragile sorcerer must be played very agressive. No hangin arround behind a wall of infantery. The incredients themself and the spells are associated with one of the four elements, that means if you and your opponent are looking for the same element, you got an even bigger problem.
So why would you go through all that hazzle ? because the spells are real \"game turner\" and extremly strong. In a skirmish system where you rarely have more than 10 Minis on the table, a spell that can kick out a strong warrior on an average roll is worth the trouble.

as far as the cats go ( by the way the kalimans have GIANT feet - not that they don´t look awesome, but theyre feet are nearly as big as theyre heads ) - the take the part of the sophisticated, benign republic and because of they´re diplomatic skills you get a bonus on ther dice roll determing who gets the first turn, plus theyre fairly quick.

btw, my favourites are the Arloks: every arlok takes up charackteristics, both physical and spiritual, of the zodiac sign theyre born under. thats why theyre shamn looks like a big toad and in case he gets injured, his skin starts to discharge acid - anyone wanna lick a toad ? lol

I have 3 starter sets and im hooked ATM. Game wise its the best thing since C3, the dice are like in Bloodbowl where you get an instant reading rather than having to do endless sums and cross reference tables, the cards play out like rock paper scissors where choosing the correct attack will give you an advantage over your opponent and the Alkemy side of it is probably the best magic system out there and is an important management aspect of the game.

As for the minis they are the best plastics I have painted. They go together and clean up really well and have fantastic adhesion for paint (nothing like resin which I have heard them compared to).

Pick up a starter set and give it a go, for 20 quid you get everything needed including a handy tape measure!

And hey I will also be at spiel, maybe Ill see you at the kraken booth, make sure you have a game there as you can win the special edition resins!

Got any pictures, DR? I can resist everything except temptation! :p

@Farin: Thanks for the summary, you\'ve made it sound very interesting, particularly the magic system. I\'m quite up for a new skirmish-type game, especially if it comes with minis as cool as that. I know what you mean about the Khaliman, tho, they do have the hugest feet! lol I was looking at the Aurlocks, too, and I quite like the crow guys.

@Mr Scream: Cool. I\'ve played a little C3 and really like skirmish games. Never played BB before, tho I understand that it\'s meant to be fun and furious. It\'d be cool to meet up- I\'m going to be there on Saturday and probably Sunday. :)
