I'm jealous ,impressed and at the same time look up to all you advanced painters that not only have the stones but the talent to completely 100% execute such things as osl and dual osl.....it'll be a long hard while before I get into that ....so for now I'll just enjoy these beautiful projects like this green spooky monster you got going on here.

I am super proud of you. I was listening to some heavy metal when I logged onto your page and saw this amazing piece....it was such an amazing moment that I even gave a slow forming smile looking at this piece while the music played. It gave me that feeling inside.you know the that hard ass feeling you get when you are listening to music and you see something cool..eg Luke cage..:\ this is such an amazing piece and papa bam is so damned proud of you for bloodying up the apron....we are indeed kindred spirits my young friend....kindred ferkin spirits!!!!

Hahaha I did think of you whilst blooding up the loin cloth John :) thank you for your lovely comments mate, YOU are a legend. Always encouraging people, always preparied to share you techniques and knowledge and never a bad word to say about anybody. Gutted you live on the other side of the pond dude as I'd v Ray much like to break bread with you :)

this isn't going to be very helpful as I don't have the flair for words or knack at describing the process that Mr Powel does but I'll do my best :(

i use a combination of brushes the biggest being a 3 the smallest a 00. I use my 1 and 0 the most. I guess stippling is the wrong word it's more dot placement and 'dabbing' I tend to use quite thick paint as well so I get a nice blob of colour. My first priority is to set the base tone as normal, then I concentrate on creating texture. Then millions of sodding glazes to help tie everything together and create the colour I'm after. highlights and shadows followed by more glazing. For the highlights I use Ben's loaded brush. I find it gives a nice transition super quickly.

It feels weird explaining my process to someone as good as you :tremble!:

Thanks all

Saints I can't really take the credit, it was sorta of Andy's idea and I've been looking to Baileys vampire for insperation.

We all have our muses! It is looking terrific, though. Your strategy of pursuing a new aesthetic with each project is producing some really impressive results. I think I may try to follow your lead in this.

Cheers Joce. I'm loving painting him at the moment although this bastard OSL is giving me tons of grief.

Do it Saints, it's very liberating and I feel I'm learning loads :)

finally got a bit of painting in tonight after a terrible week. More done on the OSL, the mask, cloak and details. I also discovered Prisma and it seems to de a great way to check the values of a piece, kinda like squinting but with technology!!

Cheers Mally, Saints and Johnny

@ John it's weird isn't it! You keep hearing the phrase 'you must thin your paints' and so I ended up feeling really strange when I used some paint directly out of the pot!!! I kept on thinking i'm doing it wrong but I kinda like the effect, maybe i'll try a little more! Add it too your bucket list and i'll do the same buddy. It would be great to visit all you painters on the other side of the pond.

I took a few pics on the SLR this afternoon. It was bothering me that the colours where very true to life. This is way more accurate to what he looks like in hand. Since taking these i've started the shrunken heads but I think I'll take the photo's in daylight on the digital.

I've also been checking out Sprockets wonderful tutorial on title plates and I'm going to give it a go. WIP attached

As always please let me know how I can tweek and improve it. Everyones advice has been invaluable so far

Thanks Zab

it a lot of painting done recently as its been a bit of a shit week, still I'm getting there on the Gobo. I've toned down the OSL, added the final highlights to the face (and hopefully reset it as the main focus point) and started the shrunken heads.

Iggy next and I'm hoping to finish the bust by next weekend.

Any help, critiques, suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

Looking just beautiful, Tim. You're really approaching this like a creative artist rather than a figure painter adhering to a fixed system & method. It holds up well as a 2 dimensional illustration! I am suuuuuuper worried about damaging such a great start, but I kind of want a few more tiny golden glints in the shaman's eyes. Nothing 'magical' looking (no OSL, for instance), just a few flecks of gold or green like in a cat's eye. Great work so far!

I agree with what Mr. SaintToad has pointed out about the approach to the work. In fact the close up looks much more like an oil painting than the usual miniature approach.
Anyway it looks super!

Thanks guys

I guess I have been approaching this more as a canvas rather than a miniature. That might be because the larger scale allows it rather than a conscious decision. Either way I thing I've enjoyed painting this guy more than anything else I've done so far. Larger scale is so much fun, so many details and space to work with!

Saint thanks for the feedback. I'll look rhave another look at the eyes as your suggestion sounds awesome

not much done on the figure but the base is sorted. Completly inspired by Sproket's awesome tutorial on his blog. If you haven't already please do check it out
