Behind the knee looks a tad wishy washy, i think too white. might be better to work up the lava stuff from white to get mad colour saturation with a glaze medium so white is almost not used in the end ....sort of this idea

I haven't really looked at lava flows or flames to much but I would think it is fine behind the knee because its random.

I think you have the right idea, Dennis--it does seem a little too white over too much space. Overall, though, the effect you have going is really awesome.

All I can say is that it's looking nice & crusty. The basalt crust is very nice and seems to be a good colour. My layman's eye would say it might benefit from a very diluted was of a metallic medium to give it that ever-so-slightly metallic sheet basalt can have. But don't listen to me, poor old drybrushing addict, this is more the territory of the 50-layers-per-highlight guys...

Ok thanks guys loads of nice ideas. This mini has been fighting me every step of the way so far but I think I'm starting to get the measure of it. I had a little time to myself yesterday so I popped down to the local art shop to get a new brush. While having a little browse I spotted some tubes of fluorescent acrylics. Red, orange and yellow and in the begin bin. I was really struggling to get the super saturation that Dennis had suggested so I thought I'd buy a tube of each and see how it worked out. I've got to say I'm very happy with the result. IRL the colour really glows. I'm now happy enough to paint the rest of re minutes in the same scheme.


@ Dennis and Sionid thanks for the feedback and tips. I think the effect is starting to take shape now and yes you're both right there was far to much white.


@ Diggy it seems I've done nothing but look at lava, lava flows, magma, pictures of other Avatars, fire, fire tutorials etc I can honestly say this guy very nearly beat me


@ Meph thank you getting the right colour has been a pain in the arse! the cooled basalt look is 2 thin coats of VMA black with some VMA blue grey blended in. This is the basic mid tone. I've since started highlighting and glazing in Leviathan purple and some fluorescent red to try and emulate the cooling rock. I'm hoping to get a really nice black to hot red transition in the chest area. Again it's fighting me every step of the way so any Frits are more than welcome


some progression shots (piss poor photography sorry!) gems aren't finished yet there just there to give me an idea on how it will look together. More highlights will be added so this is still very early days

I've never liked this Forgeworld Avatar, to me it just looks "Wrong"and if I could explain it better I would.

Ah Well personal opinions, we all have one just thankfully there not the same as everyonelses or it would be a boring world.

@ diggy loads of not so helpful mini tutorials on lava. They just didn't really have the effect I was looking for. I did find this one on YouTube though. I found it very useful. I often look at conventional 2D painting tutorials, it expands the breadth of available material and sometimes they offer an insight or technique that is transferable. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=H5HbOuahhcM

@BFK Bohun's avatar is great but his style is far above my ability to replicate. After lots and lots and lots of research on possible paint schemes I settled on something a little more 'lifelike and believable' (as far as a giant molten God of war can be believable) this is what I've been trying to work towards

@Dragonsreach yeah the FW Avatar with sword was something I desperately tried to like but couldn't. The pose is uninspiring and the balance is off. The Avatar with spear is much better. It still isn't as good as it could be but it's good enough that I wanted to paint one.

@ Gandalf and BFK. I only really wear Adidas so I must have subconsciously painted them like them! Maybe I should scrap my current base and do a skate themed one instead. Kaela Mensha Khaine God of the half pipe!

Thanks mate. Bushed so no painting for me tonight. Today the base arrived for Horus so hopefully I'll be able to glue him down a then take some photo's! That will be a landmark for me, my very first 100% complete mini!!!

And so here he is! Obviously I'll take better photos for the gallery but I'm a little to eager to get him out there! Learnt loads from painting him and loads from everyone who helped during the WIP. Any comments or crits greatly appreciated

Congrats on this your soon to be first completed display mini. Yaaaay! It was only a few months ago that the same was true for me. Just keep at it and continue to learn from yourself and others.

Try a very thin glaze of dark brown in places where there would be highlights.

With regards to the highlights. There is some 'Smoke' washed into the the highlight areas. Actually I've washed and gazed about every colour there is into this bastard. He's fast becoming my 'Eleanor'

Very nice, im loving that wooden base. I would of been tempted to add the same colours from the stone eagles head to the broken corner of the base to tie it together.

Dont sell yourself short. That Horus project is truly done very well. I absolutely love it when people use gray AND brown on their wolf pelts.

I have to say that the Horus project is extremely "clean." But then the fire dude lacks the same cleanness that characterizes Horus. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, just that it shows that maybe you were experimenting with different techniques? Does anyone else see what I'm talking about and can better explain? Anyway, just something to point out to you that may help you become more conscious of what you're doing. I know such advice is helpful to me at times.

Well, I for one like the Horus diorama a lot. The wooden baseadds a lot and the mini's painting seems top notch. Oi Loike it, oi do!
