Well tonight was the first of my new little painting groups meetings and it was fantastic. I met lots of new people, we shared lots of ideas and we generally talked nonsense. I'm really encouraged by the whole thing and cant wait for 2 weeks to pass when we next meet up. heres the fruit of tonight's labour. Refining the contrast of RuinView attachment 41384

Wow - that paint job is coming along very nicely. The glow you have inside the cracks really does make him look like he's "alive". If you want to preserve the glow I found that painting on some gloss varnish just into the cracks really does keep details like that alive. I did something similar with my Treeman on the sigils (http://www.coolminiornot.com/384445). Just my newbie two cents - feel free to ignore for your sanity.

Having a quick browse through this thread I must say that you have a natural affinity for painting that is awesome!

Thanks Kbear and Arch. Your treeman looks really cool mate and that's an Interesting idea with the varnish. I'll experiment with it but I'm hoping it won't be necessary. I'm using fluorescent paints and IRL they really do pop by themselves. Did you not find light reflected from the varnish and whited out your paintwork?

No mini painting done for 2 weeks but yesterday afternoon I did manage to scratch build a cutlass for my son for National talk like a pirate day. Kinda the same, right? Couple hours work and I'm pretty happy with it. View attachment 41703View attachment 41704View attachment 41705

With regards to the varnish: I brushed on an artists acrylic gloss varnish and then matte coated the whole model with a spray. I think the combination stopped the light reflecting too much off the sigils while still retaining some gloss.

Horse looking good mate, a liitle more yellows in places imo to ease the blend from red to white. Go easy with it though

Agree with the Ten ball , a little yellow would smash it out of the park.. And the horse already looks fecking awesome Darth .

OK Thanks Arch. I must admit I've not used any varnish apart from the GW ardcoat and that was only for tiny details to give them a little more shine. My understanding is that varnish can dull your colours although i'm not 100% certain. I'll do a test piece and see what happens (have to buy some first though)

Thanks Ten and Terr. Yeah I've repainted the fire soooooooooo many times. When I added the yellow last, I think it came out a little bit cartoony. When I come to adding it again I think i'll dial it back as you've suggested Ten. It does need to be there just far more subtly.

The Pirate sword was an rectangular off cut of wood, Whittled into shape with a stanley knife. 2 layers of plastic card stuck together for the blade and another bit of plastic card for the guard. The cutlass is half tang, that is, the blade is slotted into a grove cut half way through the handle and then screwed in place (this also serves to keep the guard in place). Old cut up brown jeans to bind the handle and then metallic paints. Pretty easy really although I'm very happy with the result.

I decided to work on another old project tonight just for variation. Here's where I am on the Flying Citadel. I saw a fabulous Mini on here a few weeks ago using tiny castle bits. A wee bit of research lead me to Dreadfleet. I found some really cheap bits on Ebay and they arrived yesterday. Pretty happy with the results so far C&C welcome as always

And there are swooping dragons! It's looking pretty cool. I'd look at building up some of the rock on the middle right - the long tower is slightly skew and the yellow rock it's on should probably tie into some of the rock above it. Just a thought.

This is still very, very early WIP at the moment Arch. Nothing is stuck down yet and i'm only really starting to build up the rock faces and textures. The real bugger will be building the wooden gantrys on the sides!

Thanks digg's. I had as well but the accusing voice from the cupboard had been getting much louder of late!

That's looking scarily similar to the artwork! The palette is great I'm finding it a lot easier to mix and get smoother blends because of the extra time I'm a lot happier with my results, might revive my WIP because I don't feel completely embarrassed by my painting anymore haha

I figured that you were still pretty early days with it. Hopefully we'll get to see more of it as it goes.

Nice resurection of this project, for the walkways maybe try 2.5 mm thick balsa wood and score in the planking detail

Thanks dude. Great to hear you're enjoying the wet palette and you shouldn't feel embarrassed about your WIP. By there very definition they're places that you post to help you improve. We'd all learn nothing at all if everything we did was faultless. Post with pride buddy

thanks Arch the tree was made by cutting a length of thin insulated wire and the twisting the exposed copper wire at both ends to form branches and roots. Liquid green stuff for bark and some woodland senics flock for the foliage.

Thanks WGS. Cool I'll have a look at the balsa wood. Not sure about engraving grain as the scale may look a little wrong. Time will tell.

not much hobby time of late but I did attend the Golem studios 2 day painting course over in Romford 2 weeks ago. Fantastic fun and Tommie is an excellent tutor, full of energy, easy to understand and very knowledgeable. I'd recommend it to anybody.

Very nice work. And it looks like metal! NMM isn't my favourite look because it can often end up looking like plastic.
