Hey coolmini longtime

Its been a weird month. First a nose dive of motivation after the Eadbanger. Then work went crazy, CRAZY!! Then my very first commission from our own WGS :) Painting the insect warriors has been a great experience. A huge challenge to get the iridescent shell look. It was also fantastic working to someone else's brief and time frame. Here's the most recent photos of these guys.

With these about to go in the post and Euro just 2 weeks away I thought I'd revisit the Cartographer. Working on the hand. It's taken me ages trying to match the green of the skin but I'm pretty happy with the result. I'm really happy with the ring and gen stone. Hopefully I'll get some more done tonight, then a base!

Thoughts and C&C always welcome

Tim

I love the iridescent colours on the insects, the orc looks great too mate. Not much to say in the way of helpfulness but I'll poke my nose in if I think of something ;)

Nice insects Tim, the iridescent look remind me a lot when I was doing experiments with my metallic last year. Happy you take on that ork again, looking forward to see your development.

Thanks guys

The insects where a real blast to paint and something completely outside of my comfort zone. This paint job was insect warriors 4.07, I repainted these bad boys tons of times before I worked out something I liked the look of. I'm happiest with the difference between the iridescent carapace and the tradition matt weapons. I think it creates a nice, visually interesting harmony. Diggs I did a SBS for Dave that I believe he will be putting on his website. It's actually pretty easy once you know how :)

bit it more done on my Orc tonight NMM musket barrel. Thoughts?

Cheers

Tim

Barrel is smack on :good:
Maybe a glaze of blues/red/yellows on the end as a heat bloom, or not, maybe don't mess with it?

The iridescent is a cool effect. Glad you are getting your motivation back. The gun barrel looks good. The outer rim of the muzzle could use a few brighter highlights where the metal would naturally wear down to raw metal. Assuming a black powder weapon, perhaps some darker blacks on the inside of the barrel. If you want to add as much interest as the rest of the figures you're could take the barrel support rings to a gold color like you have in spots on the main mini. Or leave it where it is as it is a wicked cool mini so far.

Lots of things to think about here so thanks guys

@ Lee I thought about a heat bloom but I didn't think it got a powder weapon. I'll wait until I'm a little more advanced with the whole figure and may revisit though

@Kbear the white on the muzzle is pretty bright already, I think my photos may be a little dark. Nice idea about the barrel clamps. I've tried a gold on the metal plate on the underside of the gun and I like the effect. I'll probably do it to the other sections as well.

I'm glad you guys like the iridescent look. So much trial and error involved getting a final effect I was pleased with :)

i did did some detailing on the musket last night. Think it's going in the right direction now

That's looking very nice indeed Tim I particularly like the gold detailing on the under side of the musket the highlite placement and blending is excellent.

Really nice job using the depth of the apparent wood grain to show volume on the stock of the weapon. And still one of my favorite projects underway!

Cheers all

@ Andy. Thanks mate, wonderful to hear from a NMM master

@ Kbear. Thanks dude. I'm putting everything I've learnt from the Paul Bonner dio into this and it's great to know it's paying off.

@ Saint. Thanks mate. I was terrified of the gun at first but I'm having a blast painting it. I've been saving tons of wooden rifle photos into my reference folder. So many in fact I'm sure MI5 are currently investigating me :)

Myself, Gandalf and Wargamesculptor have just come back form a fantastic 2 day painting course taught by Meg Maple. Such an inspiring weekend. Meg has a huge amount of knowledge and a teaching style that I found both easy to understand and supportive. Here's the fruit of today's labour. Gorak the Red, Pirate Kaptain of the Schooner (insert name here. Any suggestions?) and second crew member in my pirate orc pirate dio.

Thanks again for a great weekend Mally and Dave

C&C always welcome

Top notch, Darth. Definitely feeling those intense (Bonner-y) blues on the face and I love the hat so far. Your leather has always impressed me, but that oxidized copper is fantastic. Any tips to help achieve that really punchy verdigris?
Also, what is the status of the Paul Bonner diorama? I know you were jammed up a bit with deadlines, but also had some longer-term plans for it.
