Tips for new posters/may raise your scores

Ok heres the scenario:

You just finished the best figure/unit/terrain/vehicle ever! Man you just have to show everyone this thing!

You take a picture.......in fact this things so great, you need to take pictures at more than one angle and showcase them all as seperate submissions so we can see how great this thing is!

STOP!!!! NO!!!

The truth is, by about the third angle that comes up, your score is starting to drop from \"irritation\" votes. If your mini is that great one view from the front will prove it.

If you have an image editor by all means give us some different angles but merge them into one submission and your score wont suffer from \"irritation\" votes.

I hope this helps new posters get more positive feedback on their submissions.

i hold my hand up!!

it was me sir!

yeah i have to admit i did do this with one of my bloodbowl minis but i was just experimenting to see whether the flash altered the score, and it did actually! not a sight of difference.at the time i didnt know how to merge them together. im very sorry:(:(:(
will anyone forgive me? i was a noob at the time.:innocent:

Might help some.

I posted the front and back of a mini here because I couldn\'t get both side on the same picture and still be under 100K. The reason I posted both side was because I thought that the back side of my dwarf was done exceptionally well.

Alas, neither post scored very high. I don\'t think this is from irritation, as they scored higher than any of my other single angle posts. I think it is because the picture quality sucked.

The best advice, I think, is try your hardest to learn something new every time you do anything. If you improve your converting, while improving your painting, while improving your photography, while improving your photoshop skills, your scores are bound to go up. Right?

Hmm you need a new image editor then or something. I do this easily all the time using photoshop... There\'s the option to save it from 1-12 (1 most compressed, 12 least, but I think with my camera above 10 is pointless anyways). I usually end up saving in the 7-8 range when posting front and back pictures (my version of photoshop tells you what the size will be as saving... most useful). As far as I can tell it doesn\'t alter the image quality at all.

Another thing to watch for is the tendancy to think that your mini is the best ever and place a high score on it when you post. If you post it with a medium or low(ish) value the average score will probably go up. (Been there and learnt this from experience)

If the back has something to show off I personaly dont mind seeing separate front and back views. Its when I then see a close-up of a wing and then a face and then his arm with a weapon and then, and then, and then.....ad nauseam. Ok I\'m stretching it a bit but you all know what I\'m talking about. We\'ve all seen those submissions that seem to never stop.

I think this goes for units too. Unless their all GD quailty dont submit all the minis that make up the unit. Show us some of the standout figures from the unit.

I\'m not picking on anyone or trying to make anyone feel guilty. I\'m just trying to point out some things that will help newer posters \"fit in\", for a lack of a better phrase, and see better results with their submissions.

I think this post is a great idea. I especially like the fact that its titles \"Tips for new posters\" instead of something like \"Why New people don\'t deserve to live\" or \"#&#** (*^^# annoying new people\"

Ya know what would be nice? if we could collect a lot of these positive suggestions, learned the hard way, and put them all in an article entitled someething like \"Suggestions for Newbies\" or \"Successsful Posting Tips\" or something like that. as an article, it would be easier to find. I mean, two days of inactivity and a Forum post can be buried 3 or 4 pages deep!

old school

I\'m doing the whole photo thing, old school style. I have a \"film\" camera. Film is a thing that was invented in the 19th century and used up until the last decade of the 20th century, when the world went digital.

I have this bulky, rather expensive, camera that I got about 10 years ago. So I take pictures with my pathetic macro lense, which will photo a mini at half it\'s real size. That\'s much better than the average \"film\" camera, but it doesn\'t hold a candle to the average digital camera.

Anyway, I\'m not sure if that is contributing to my 100K woes. But I have to go through a long process of scanning and uploading... well, there it is.

There\'s nought wrong with celluloid...

Digital cameras may be the up-coming technology, but you will have to spend upwards of $2-3000 to get one that has the same resolution of a moderately priced \'film\' camera.
The only real advantage of digital is the speed with which you can get your piccies on the screen.

Not so fast Finn

I just got the new Canon Rebel digital camera that is a true SLR (view thru the lens) and uses all of the Canon lenses I already have for my film camera, and it\'s awesome. 6.3 megapixel, gives me an 18MB file when I open it up in Photoshop:eek:

AND it will only set you back $1000 US, well OK so that is still pretty expensive I\'ll admit, but now my previous investment in film equipment hasn\'t gone to waste and I\'m happy. Of course, they will have one that is half the price and twice the resolution out by years end!:(lollol

Oh and you are right there is naught wrong with celluloid (been in the photo lab and related businesses for 25 years), there is still no cheaper way to store massive image data, but the digitals are so darn convenient, doncha think?;)

I wouldn\'t argue with that....

Resolution is getting better, and prices are coming down. But I don\'t think I could buy the equivalent of your camera here in rip-off Britain for anywhere near the same price and to get something that can compare with my Nikon F4 is still a couple of years and a second mortgage down the line.;)

True Enough!!!

You are obviously a man of descerning quality to have invested in an F4, truly one of the best cameras ever made. If that is your standard you may indeed be waiting a while:)
And in the mean time you will never be wanting for quality that is for damn sure!:D

err not that you guys are getting off track *wink*

but I dont think any new posters need to get a super-duper camera set up, just dont post so many submission of the same mini......*cough*hijackers*cough*lol

What you think it\'s a hijack to talk about each others equipment??? Or is just wrong for 2 guys to be talking about each others equipment at all?:D

I was hoping to add a little to the quality dialog!

1st poster suggestions:

1) Use the best image you can make with whatever you have, even a flatbed scanner draped with a dark cloth can work pretty well.
2) DO NOT post multiple images of the same mini as seperate submissions, trust me, as proud as you are of it, many of us can get tired of seeing the same thing over and over. Learn to combine the multiple view images into 1 file so it is 1 submission!
3) Look at your images on your screen, if they look WAY dark or WAY light or WAY fuzzy don\'t post them until you can fix them. A little adjustment in an image editor can do worlds of good!
4) Go get a disposable camera if nothing else and have the lab give you a disk with your film images in digital format, most mini-labs are doing that in the US these days if asked, not sure about the rest of the big blue marble.
5) You are better off shooting your pictures outside with indirect daylight than using the flash. Flashes make the lighting way to harsh! Or better yet take a packing box cut off one side and the top and then drape a white sheet or white cloth over the top then take it out in brigth sunlight. Instant semi-professional soft box lighting. Stick your miniature in the box and voila you have nice soft lighting that avoids harsh highlights and should light your shadows well too!

I consider this the end of my cough..hijack..cough,gag!

But a really good digi camera doesn\'t hurt either!lol

And don\'t backlight your submissions ... Nobody wants to see your shadowy figure profiles.

I\'ve seen several entries put on a window sill and then snapped with the sun shining right into the camera.

The light should be coming from (at the very minimum) over your shoulder.

Got to agree that the Cannon Rebel Digital is nice and all (using one along with the F in my side business) but I get 11 megapixal pictures from my trusty old Nikon F - and I get them on CD for about 8 bucks - or I get the film developed and scan em myself for 2 bucks. :D

Hmmm.

When I said the backside of my dwarf was \'done\' exceptionally well, I didn\'t mean in a \"Deliverence\" sort of way.lol

Now I\'m thinking we need a \"squeel like a pig\" smiley face.
