Title problems

I am generally anti-censorship, but I fail to see how the title of this can do anything but cause trouble and offend many people:

Why the hell is that up there. Whose idea was that? I\'m pretty damn offended. I come to this place everyday and I can\'t believe I\'m seeing that. Not here of all places. I get hit with racism in my life every so often but I never EVER thought I\'d see that here. So much for having a place to escape to. I\'m not offended I\'m pissed off. Sad and pissed off. The paint jobs sucks to top it off.

Actually you were the first person that came to my mind when I saw that, I thought \"Pat would kick the crap out of that guy if he could get ahold of him\". Man, sorry to bring you down with that, but I had to point it out so it can be removed hopefully.

I clicked on the webpage link, and the site is not in English, it looks like maybe Norwegian (I have no idea really). So I am hoping somehow this is just a language thing?

Linguistic complexity.....

This is not an excuse, but there may well be a bit of linguistic confusion here. I certainly hope so. As most languages drive from Latin/Greek some translations can appear inappropriate....
There is nothing else in the post to suggest that the poster meant offense...

Yeah maybe we\'ll see if Racism gets brushed off as casually as pornography.

That really angers me.

It\'s dutch, but that\'s just plain stupid. Stupid to put in it\'s title that his skin is dark. At least I wouldn\'t title my Space Marine \"Black Space Marine\"

Guys the perp is in Tilburg in the netherlands if my grasp of the language is anything to go by.

I would have thought that the use of the word in question was as offensive there as it is here (UK) and in the US.

I suggest a PM to CA or borg by a few people would get it removed, don\'t see the need for this kind of language and don\'t see why it should have slipped through the net.

I really hope that it\'s just as simple as someone just not knowing better but that is a stretch. I really really have a problem seeing that. I\'ve dealt with crap at my job, I\'ve dealt with crap on the street and in malls and stores but seeing that word here of all places. Damn.

You know Pat, I lived in Swaziland back in the early \'80s, and it is an independant nation surrounded on 3 sides by South Africa. At that time, Apartheid was in it\'s full force, and I was sickened seeing seperate washrooms, restaurants and beaches. I am happy that Swaziland was no tthe same, and I am happy that the Apartheid rule is over.

On this topic, if the \"N\" word is dutch for something then I imagine there is a dutch word for \"Giant\". If it was my site, I would either put the guy on my \"watch\" list, or just plain ban him.

Wow, sorry about that guys, I must have just authorized it without looking at the title. Not sure how I missed that. Most of the time, I do check the title and try to put in the right title so that they won\'t appear as Another mini, but obviously I missed this one.

I have changed his title, thanks for the heads up.

Thanks Dave! I hope I don\'t get in crap for my comment I left the guy. It was a shame to see so I am glad you changed it...

On the other hand...

I saw that the title was changed, but I did see the original earlier and was a bit shocked by it. I thought \"what kind of person would use a title like that!?\"

Then it occurred to me that the painter may be of African descent himself (I\'m assuming the painter is male). And to put it in an un-PC fashion- blacks will call other blacks that word and it doesn\'t carry the same offensivness than if a white person would use it. Anyone ever listen to comedian Chris Rock? He uses it all the time in his stand-up.

Although, even if the painter is black, he should have realized what a ruckus using that word here would start.

Just my thoughts....:)

Yeah, this whole thing is a shame for this site. As I\'ve said, my bestest friend is Jamacian and I stick up for him whenever I can. Very few things in the world enrage me, but stupidity and ignoroance do it everytime.. racism seems to be the biggest form of those.

Thanks borg for clearing that up as quickly as you did.

And in response to Duende. Yes comedians and others use the term but there is a big difference. It\'s like mocking yourself or someone in your family. YOU can do it but others cannot. Ever been pissed off with a girlfriend buddy or your mother or something and you called them a derogatory word? That is bad and never should happen but imagine someone else saying the same thing to them. That is far worse. I imagine that person would end up on the wrong end of a beating.

Neither is acceptable but one is worse than the other.

Well, Pat already voiced my opinion on that, what I wanted to point out is that even if that was acceptable, the painter is white according to the picture on his website.

I thought about it some more, and I think

a) I assume that he is non English speaking, so he might just think it is funny, offensive, but funny and I doubt very much he meant anything malicious. He was probably trying to be funny or \"smart\" and missed the mark. When English is not your first language, sometimes, you can get yourself in trouble.

b) I doubt very much that he is black himself, and when black people use the \"N\" word with each other, it normally ends with an \"a\" not \"er\". There has never been a time that the later form is used in an endearing way.

I am sure a lot of you got offended by it. I am truely sorry that I let it slip by. So I will be a lot more careful when I authorize from now on. If you guys do see something like this again, just pm me and I will take care of it. This site is for people to come and relax and enjoy themselves, no point getting anyone upset.

When i first saw this entry in the Browse Gallery, i remembered how much i hate stupid people, and avoid them at all costs, so i just scrolled down, and clicked \"next page\". It reminds me of a quote from George W. Bush who, when talking to the president of Brazil, inquired \"Do you have blacks there too?\". Ignorance and social differences create gaps between cultures, but some things just arent acceptable.

I gotta say, that here of all places is whered id least expect to see racism, and i just hope it is some linguistic misunderstanding, as has already been covered. Im not really sure i can relate with the black users here on cmon, because i, as a pale pasty irish american, being burnt to a crisp in arizona, have never faced any racism other than subtle social groups, or nonchalant humor between friends. All i can do is empathize with Pat and the other black members, and hope it doesnt happen again...

I did leave a comment on that Giant asking for the name to be changed, hoping that it would be the painter that did it.
I\'m gald to see it is changed, but also saddened to see that it had to be a moderator that ended up doing it.
In hindsight I\'m sorry that my comment wasn\'t strong enough to make the painter realise how offensive the title was.
