Maybe I missed something. What was the name origionally? I know in the states it was VERY common for black people to call themselves chocolate, and God knows what else. Is Chocolate Giant the origional name?

Me being german I would not have seen such an offence in the word. \"Niger\" means \"Black\" and it seems that people of colour don\'t mind being called \"blacks\". In German we have the word \"Neger\" which is really not much more than a regional difference in prnounciation. I have yet to find someone being offended being called a \"Neger\". Political correctness may be a good thing, but if I mean no harm, I can call a black person \"Neger\" (eventhough I never actually found it necessary to state the fact that someone has another colour than me). If I want to offend, I can call him whatever I want and still be offended. This somewhat feels like saying \"cripple\". I see no shame in the word cripple, and I have talked to many handicapped and crippled people that don\'t either.

And why is everyone afraid to use that word for the sake of discussion? The title said \"Nigger giant\". It\'s not like I now say that word as a racial slur just because it is often used as one. I have seen the word Nazi more than enough and don\'t feel attacked in my pride as a German.

Oh, something occured to me: Could it have some relation with \"to nick\" as in \"to steal\"? If so, then I could see there is an insult in all this...

I think \'Nigger\' is the derogatory form of the word \'Negro\' as opposed to being related to \'nick\'.

I would say that in the english-speaking world the term nigger is used predominantly as a slur, or for shock-value (which includes black comedians). In this situation i dont think it is \'political correctedness gone wrong\', but someone going for the  value.

And i think the difference with using the term Nazi on this site, is that it is the only real way of qualifying exactly what you are talking about e.g. how else could you describe the party of the ruling power in Germany in the 1930-40s. Yet there are a vast number of non-offensive ways of describing a black/afro-caribbean/african-american person.

The term angers/frustrates/alienates people and that is the last thing we want on CMON... people were holding back from using the word so as not to offend.

Ah. Well, I guess it\'s like english \"shit\" ans German \"Scheisse\".... shit is a lot stronger than scheisse ;)

Is that so, Mosch?
I rather think that it always depends on who you say it to or in what context, no matter where you are.

that depends on what you had for dinner the night before! lollol....

sorry....As to put my two cents in, I think that we\'re dealing with a guy who has, in fact, never even had to deal with issues like racism in his close proximity. I think I would dare to go as far as saying he strikes me(and here\'s that lovely prejudice again), by taking a look at his site, like a middle class white boy, who was raised in a very protected, non multi-cultural neighbourhood.

Is this a bad thing? No.

Does this excuse the fact he was pretty damn ignorant towards other users of this site? Again, No.

I think that in any society people should try to respect eachother, their beliefs and way of life. although i am by no means the perfect little girl what prejudice is concerned(it seems to be a disease suffered mainly by white westerners such as myself), I do not believe this can be an excuse for his actions. In a way, I respect outright neo-nazis more than people who just cannot even comprehend(or have the empathy to comprehend), that certain words or slurrs as they are called would be taken as offensive to certain other people.
The only question that I then ask myself is, where does it stop? i mean, afro-americans and other ethnic minorities call themselves all the slurrs white men made up, like nigger, beano, cook etc etc to take the power the words have over them away, same as the gay movement did in the sixties. I do not believe in pc behaviour perse, mainly because it stops people from expressing themselves, but I do believe in common sense, and a basic respect to other human beings.
End of it, the guy just strikes me as a pretty damn ignorant little sod, who, in my mind, is not worth even having a 5 second conversation with.

Rant/deep thought over. :)

After reading the various responses in this thread, I have to say I\'m impressed. It\'s quite refreshing to see that the word is viewed with intolerance by people who aren\'t quite as affected by it. It\'s really nice to see. I\'m proud to part of this community. Wonderful.

I rather think that it always depends on who you say it to or in what context, no matter where you are.

Suppose you walk down the street and a car drives through a puddle, splashing water on you. Now it happens to you in GB and you shout \"shit\" - that is a lot stronger than saying \"scheisse\" when it happens to you in Germany. Don\'t know how to describe it further, but that\'s one thing I learned in GB ;)

The Artisan: Don\'t feel offended. The painter probably meant no offense with the title and neither did I with my question/self-argument on the first page. It\'s just ignorance. A lot of \"gangsta\" movies just go nigger this, nigger that and may convey the message that this word is OK to use. If it seemed as if I was trolling I am sorry, that\'s not what I had in mind. It\'s just another effect of cultures clashing ;) Personally, from one Patrick to another: I get called \"Nazi\" quite often (not on CMON though ;)) when people find out I am German, but I don\'t feel offended, I am sorry for those people :duh:

No offense taken Mosch. I completely understand. I\'m suffering from a cold so my already short temper was ready to blow anyway. I probably didn\'t need to get as angry as I did.

I have a small request to make though, could we all ease up on the typing of that word? Perhaps I\'m sensitive but the word is a little tough to see even in type regardless of the context it was used. Just a request.

I\'m still trying to figure out why people make up excuses... He is a poor middle-class white boy who doesn\'t no better... BS. I am pretty sure the guy has a tv and if he has a tv, he KNOWS all about it. If not, well obviously he has a computer.

It\'s the same as calling Mosch a Kraut (sorry not personal just an example)... or a Vietnamese person a Gook. It is rude, derogatory and racist. No excuse. I just hope it stops here...

I never actually found Kraut to be really insulting... in fact, I like Sauerkraut! And I\'m going to cook and eat some right now! Argh, I\'m starting to salivate :D

And I\'ll say it again, he probably meant no offense and though it would be \"cool\" to choose that name. It was just a stupid joke, it\'s gone now, no real reason to talk about it anymore ;)

BUT, as we are currently having this discussion anyway, what about that stuff FW ElDep has uploaded?
http://www.coolminiornot.com/45999 is much worse than the giant, I think. There\'s also
http://www.coolminiornot.com/45998
and
http://www.coolminiornot.com/45996
Both are grossly offensive I think, but have not yet been removed. And frankly, they should stay. I mean, the admins think those are alright, and eventhough I think Slaanesh-Nazis are incredibly inapropriate, they still have some \"artistic value\". I doubt that the painter tried to convey a deeper message, but even if that is not the case, one could argue like this and would be a valid reason to me.

Really? Why? It is part of the conversation. I guess I\'m a little thick skinned to it.

That which does not kill us makes us stronger. I guess I\'m there. Stronger that is.

I use the same arguement about living in Korea. People here always say, \"They don\'t know better.\" I feel that there is the internet, Koreans idolise American movies, and inmitate them (us) to no end. But they still do stuff like tell a black person (me in particular) to take a shower and wash the black off their skin. A black teacher here was referred to as \'gorilla\' by his students, asnd there was a Korean pop group who actually performed in Black Face. they \"didn\'t know it was a bad thing\". I don\'t know.

My two pennies,

I personally think words should be taken as words only(sticks and stones anyone)
Im 19 stone and suffer from depression but I dont let it effect me when I hear the word fatty etc, which is very often. My GF is 6 stone and has ginger hair but she doesnt get upset when she hears downgrading remarks.

BUT I do understand that some words do cause some people offence so I do not use them in any situation.Which is how I think it should be.

As for the brown giant.
I on a personal level find this name nearly as offensive as the first. Why n****r,why brown, why any thing. It is a giant whatever colour and putting a colour in the name is the wrong way to go.I had a discussion once on what to call skintone for black people as I didnt want to cause offence. The outcome was black. This term seems to be OK at the moment in the UK where I thought it wouldnt.?
I think the guy in question didnt know what he was doing. You are right to point it out but I suggest you dont let people who dont know better not to get you upset.
And remember this sort of thing is very uncommon here.On the whole everyone is very friendly and respectful.;)

Well said Klute.

As for Ebon Bhudda, I don\'t see this about being \"stronger\" Or even \"thick skinned\" Bravo for you. I see this being about common respect in a respectful place. I can let this roll off of my shoulder as well but why not educate someone. What is wrong with respecting someones feelings? This world would be a better place if we all took a moment out to think about our actions and stop pissing off each other for something so simple. Not a lot to ask really is it?

I think the fact that the poster has not even tried to explain himself of apologize doesn\'t say much for him. I have to assume that not only did Borg change the name, he must have sent him a message about it.
