To dullcote or not to?

Hi

I have just finished my Gamesday entry (woo) but i havent decided wether to varnish it or not yet. I have no experience with dullcote but i am wonjdering will the paint on my model scratch off on the way to gamesday? if i dont dullcote?

it will be fine without mate, just take a little more care that\'s all.

it\'s the smaller gw comps where it needs it as every one seems to look with their hands at those events.

the GD staff show a hell of a lot more respect for the entries.

There is still the odd case of mini droppage, but just a few altogether usually, so out of all of the entries each year that\'s a tiny percentage. I\'d take the gamble and just leave it as is until after the event.

I\'ve just been contemplating the same thing but I\'m near the end of a can and it could spoil the end finish so I\'m leaving it...
The GW guys don\'t handle the minis generally just the bases and Dullcote won\'t protect from being dropped on the floor anyway....

If your unsure best advice is don\'t bother..

You will find that most of the top figure painter do NOT clear coat their figures as it takes away from the paint job. It you have something that looks shiny because you mixed some sort of medium in the paint, a little Vallejo brush on matt coat works great but very thin.

Thats why also you will see all the top serious figure painters mounting their work to some kind of a simple plinth..so you handel the plinth not the figure.

really - you would argue things like dull coat or varnish then dullcote detract from the mini??? How so?> I always thought people said the dullcote really brought things together and helped an ounce to blend it all/.///// idk

Dull coat or any serious matt or dulling spray is going to have some sort of a flattening agent in it, in the dase of dull coat its sort of yellows things. It also dulls things like metallics if you use them.

Acrylic paints should be matt right out of the bottle. Only if you add some sort of medium like a slow dry or an ink will they appear shiny.

Its to each their own, I dont say I won\'t use a flat coat some where on my models, but if they are competition I paint to avoid them.

I think that the higher the quality of the paint job the more any kind of varnish will reduce the overall quality, whereas the opposite can be true for an average paint job. The varnish can indeed tie it all together and work in your favour.
