Too excited to paint

I\'m so excited, I just ordered the whole line of 60 game color vallejo paints and I\'m so stoked to paint right now. But I cant paint with my old paints now can I? I\'m sure that my old paints just suck and I hate them and they would ruin any mini that I painted. Damn you GW and your crap open once-and-done, dry your paints in a flash, thanks for the cash bottles. I\'m done with you! (sigh) So I\'ll just keep voting on cmon till the wonderful ups guy shows up... in like a week. arrrgggghh!!!:|~

Nice one Ripper - I know how you feel \'cos I felt exactly the same when I ordered my complete set! What you can do is order more figures, so that when the paint arrives you have some spanking new figures to get working with

Stop saying GW paints are crap and pure and pure rubbish and all that ! They are
good quality paints, except for someones
that have low pigment rates and don\'t
cover well lika the red and white and the bottles and good.. we know put thinned and taken care of they\'re very good to
paint with... though Vallejo is better you shouldn\'t dry them and stop using it !

Not that I\'m trying to cause an argument, but I too am planning to buy said Vallejo paints because I feel citadel paints bite the big one. As my skill in painting has improved, my desire for better paints and brushes has grown. GW paints offer a good choice for any painter, but they are a far cry from the \"best\", or even \"great\" paints. And not even their new colours or lids can change my opinion!

I gotta defend GW paint too - the bottles suck but the paint is fine to great (metallics) depending on the color - not necessarily better than Vallejo but the paint itself is not crap . . .

I\'ve used both, GW for the last 8 years and Vallejo paints for the last 6 months. I use them in conjuction, independantly and mixed with each other.

Some of the GW paints are better then their counterparts in Vallejo and vis-a-versa. The problem is the GW bottles. I\'ve bought empty Vallejo bottles and started transfering my GW paints to them.

I bought the new GW paints in the new bottles, but have yet to try them out so can\'t comment on those.

Frankly, GW paints when used properly are excellent. And though I love Vallejo paints, I find that they seperate too quickly from each other and their medium.

But what the hell nothing is perfect.

Actually, I like GW\'s paints as well. I still have some of the original flip top lids (as well as all the damn screw lids):flame:

I use the Vallejos right along with the GW, and everyone lives in a rainbow filled happy land!!!

I like them both about equally, and pilfer each range depending on the colour I want rather than any concern over quality. With the colours I use regularly, GW\'s pots aren\'t an issue (and the new pots are excellent, so in a wee while the pots won\'t be a problem at all), and if I hardly ever use it then bashing it on the desk for a while isn\'t a big issue . I tend to turn to GW for bright colours (As I\'m not overly fond of Game Colour so far, it doesn\'t suit the way I like to paint, breaks down too much on thinning), and vallejo for the rest as they\'ve got such a big range - my greys, creams, browns and blues tend to come from that range. And white too - it really does seem to be a little less grainy than Skull White.

One handy thing I\'ve found though, that i\'ll just add here - GW\'s Storm blue seems to have a volatile pigment that bleeds through lighter layers on top, turning them purple. A bunch of other colours do too, including Ultramarines Blue, Imperial Purple, Vallejo\'s Medium Blue etc. What *doesn\'t* is the Vallejo Game Colour Stormy Blue. Ok, so I like *some* game colour . It\'s a good match for it\'s counterpart in GW\'s line, and doesn\'t suffer from the bleed through.

Neither does the dark purple I mix from Stormy Blue and Red (926), which is a good sub for Imperial purple if you just want a dark purple and don\'t have to match it.

Just to clarify: I Hate GW bottles.

I like some of the GW paints. Snot Green over DAngels green I use alot. Some of my very old GW paint, like from the Creature set, some of that stuff is still good to use.

So I was just venting that I\'m excited to get the Vallejo. Plus I\'ve never bought a whole set before so I\'m extra excited.

I\'ll still buy a few GW paints when the new bottles are in full circulation but not many, most are too thick for my liking and I cant be bothered to thin my paints all the time.

When I went into my first GW about 4 years ago the guy at the table told me the paints were condensed. So I\'ve always been under that impression and responded accordingly (added water to mix up a batch).

I must say I VERY RARELY paint straight out of the bottle any more - I\'m always mixing or thinning or something so it\'s never been a problem to add water . . .

I nearly always thin my paints these days. Although Vallejo\'s Black in the game colour range seems to be quite runny anyway so I don\'t thin that one too much

Anyway, I am slowly replacing my GW paints with Vallejos mainly because of the problem with the GW bottles. The old flip tops were fine and I still use paint from some of those bottles, but as for the screw tops, well they really do screw you don\'t they?lol:flame:

Haven\'t yet bought any of the new flip top lids so can\'t comment there. I also like the Vallejo transparents from the model colour range. :]

I agree with all comments here. Whilst I have just bought the set of Vallejo paints, I will not be throwing away my GW paints.....and I have loads of the stuff! The old flip-top type and the new screw top. It\'s the bloomin\' pots that cause me grief, so I\'m going to buy some empty vallejo type bottles.

As Darkblade said, nothing is perfect. Hell if it was, the CMON forums would be awfully quiet.... lol

Half the problem is my (our?) obsessive nature...

Logic tells me that it doesn\'t have to be all Vallejo, or all GW. What\'s wrong with mixing and matching, throw in a couple of Andrea and Coat d\'arms while we are at it.

The problem is, the evil obsessive demon on my shoulder keeps telling me that my Paintier 80 looks scruffy with all those mixed bottles and would look much nicer with just Vallejo...This is the same demon that tells me not to paint because it will use up my precious collection of paints and wear my brushes out...

Does anyone else suffer from this difficulty, or should I go and see a psychologist ..Oh wait..I am one..I know I\'ll give myself a discountlollol

Hummm, Haven\'t this already been discused all before ? I seem to recall a few topics about vallejo/citadel paint and a poll. it would be funny to put all those back to back and see how much we repeat our self.
Finn I have the same problem has you but only with brand new mini, I just sit there looking at it thinking of the best way to paint it. But somthing tell\'s me not to start or I\'ll mess it up. Do I also get a discount ???

... just thinking - an abvious benefit to Vallejo, that hasn\'t been mentioned, is that they take up considerably less space on the paint table . . . no doubt a plus for many of us

I\'m still using the GW shining Gold a friend gave to me about 18 years ago...

I also have the inks in the dropper bottles, all still work fine.

I\'ve noticed that the GW paints have been a bit variable in consistency and coverage over the last 18 years, they went through a period of being really thin and transparent, but since the screw tops they seem to be generally quite thick, but also cover quite well (except my golden yellow which is weak).

I\'m just waiting for the new pots to come, those screw tops are awful.
