Too grainy, yes, no?

Well, after a long time out of painting, I decided to come back and try and get some work done, but I was wondering if I\'m painting right again or not.. So, I was wondering on what your thoughts were of this:

The yellowish highlight is needed on the NMM because it\'s a OSL peice, but is it too grainy/chalky? I\'ve been mostly using washes of thin paint, and as youcan se I\'ve tried to do a bit of \"zenithal primer\" and so maybe that\'s just freaking me out.. So, comments, questions, suggestions, flames? What?

yes

its looks grainy because of the white primer over the black primer. a few more thin coats and the problem will disapear.
ive had the same problem when i tried zenithial(sp) priming. but it is eventually all worth it

i dont know what OSL is but if you gonna paint over that then i dont think it will be grainy in the long run when it is sealed.

It is.

I\'d suggest using a thin coat of grey paint right on the primer to prevent the grainy effect.

As for the mini it does look a little grainy, but I am sure that you will be able to remedy it.

I woke up this morning and debaated repainting all the steel NMM again.. Which I might.. But I show the face because it turned out okay the first time, but as you can see the arm looks grainy... Weird.

Zenithal priming from black to pure white can make paint look a bit grainy, so if I don\'t have an airbrush or grey primer, I just tend to apply some quite thin coats of fortress grey or codex grey over the zenithal to smooth it out, along with some thinned white to enhance the highlights a bit. It\'ll still be a tiny bit grainy after that, but with a thin basecoat or two, and a highlight, it should smooth itself out nicely.

The other possibility is that the primer coat itself is grainy...have you checked to make sure that\'s not the case?

Looking closely I would go along with Nelson and say its the white primer.
The zenithal on the first shots doesn\'t look smooth,the spray \"droplets\" look large.Ive used GW skull white spray and its a lot finer than what you have there.
I think you are fighting a losing battle over the primer.
I guess a grey wash could smooth it out but you probably know better than me on that

Well, it may be the primer, but I\'m also finding a lotof my paint tops have a LOT of dried paint in them. After taking off the eye dropper tips and washing them out, I find thepainting\'s going a lot smoother. I aslo did end up painting over the NMM because I realized it was wrong...

PS: Did anyone ever think I was doing this for my own OSL article? :]
