So here he is, after a ton of work...

Firsts: NMM silver and gold, base that doesnt look 100% crap, hourglass(and the last...) first attempt at wood grain...looks alright but too small to see in picture(on hourglass) first mini for a painting comp...first mini i actually decided to blend with(fully)

Colours/Shades used: around 73, around 28 of which were Browns

hopefully it does me well in competition, i sure learned a bunch(like how not to do many things :p)

oh just before pics....base is paler, not so browny, armour is a bit less yellowy, there is a whiteish blend in the hammer crack, there is white on the silver and some gold

comment, criticize(whatever you can think of...i never take negative to heart, and i dont run away crying...for long :D)

I\'ve never really tried NMM (well once but that attempt was a looooong time ago) but right now it kinda looks more like stone... Maybe try using some blue tones in there and get some more contrast between the shadows and highlights, make sure the final highlights are all the way up to pure white. Hope that helps a little :)

Maybe a tint of shadow grey? I\'m pretty much learning this myself and i reckon you could do with what angus said or use shadow grey for the blue colour. Thats what I\'m doing at the moment anyway. Heres an example of mine (even though theres soo many on this site that is far,far better) :( . Look at the sword HERE

ok thanks everyone, i screwed up on the face, which kinda turned out neat because i peeled off half of the paint, left the rest and now it looks like he has bionics, so now im going to try and NMM it, and if im not too angry ill post it :p

***the blending isnt the smoothest i know, i need to work on that, but i cant seem to get the shiney-ness, i keep getting blaaah grey..


so i STILL dont like it...and im very angry at my lamp, it keeps drying the paint after i thin it and before i apply so its rough...im getting a new one very soon

my gold i think looks very nice in this picture below


im really thinking bout that wet palette dealy now...

to make the nmm metal pop out add spots of white for the glare.

also try using carefully placed glazes to change the tone.
this will help get rid of that grey look.

and remember, contrast is the key to nmm.
just like tony said, more shading and highlighting.

i had white int here but it seemed out of place, i guess i need to blend the grey whiter next time

now glazes are something i need to look into, i may already be doing them, but im not sure

and as for contrast, i know my pictures arent top quality, but does it look like theres too much? as in it goes from black to bright too quick?

man gold wasnt nearly as hard as silver...

well my question was, do i go from black to bright too quickly? in the bionics or does it just need a bit better blending?

ill try and highlight it a bit brighter to get that pop that was mentioned

im just tyring to make sure thats all

I\'m just experimenting with nmm at the moment and I find a quite strong blue (just a little bit ) such as GW regal blue helped get rid of the grey look. Also a few times at the stages you are at I have thought the \"metals look flat \" but the final highlights as angus has nicely demonstrated in photoshop help finish the effect.
also finishing the model bring\'s it all together better..
I\'m no expert but it seems when painting NMM I\'m not as fooled by the effect because I know how I did it.
looking good though I like that rich gold.

what colour\'s did you use for it???

on the painting side everyone\'s pretty much said it...just keep at it and don\'t give up, just remember:\"...A failure isn\'t failure, if a lesson from it\'s learned...\"

I would say crop your pics closer to the mini, so we are just looking at the mini and not all the other stuff around it. The glare on the lamp base doesn\'t really help matters

***i was thinking of adding some blues, in fact i did try in my first attempt i think(regal blue actually :)) i may try it again when i try it on something else(probably something a bit bigger)

as to colours used:

scorched brown
vermin brown
bronzed flesh
bubonic brown(most important one)
golden yellow
bleached bone

and of course mixing once or twice in between(well once, i will mix more for a smoother finish next time)

***good thing im one of those persistent types hahahah

and i plan on getting a new lamp, that wont dry my paint on me, that wont have that yellow lighting, and should help the quick photos out a bit

but for now ill crop them closer, i just realised that is a mighty amount of glare...wow...

thanks!, im busy reorganising stuff so i havent done the final touches to that silver yet!
