Torquemada Finished Mini

I find it\'s really hard to pull NMM off without a very forced imaginary light source. Your colors are looking quite nice to me, but all the gold areas are highlighted evenly on almost all the surfaces. For this to really look more like metal you need to pick a light source (I usually go for above and to the right for some reason) and highlight as if this was what was making the shiny lighter parts of metal.

To clarify a bit - if your figure was lit from above and to the right then everything on the brighter side of the figure would be brighter. As you get further from the light source you would shade your metals down accordingly. It might help to shine a light on you model from the same direction as your imaginary light source. Notice what\'s in shadow and what\'s not...

Hope this helps.

Also you should ad some bleaks to give it a metallic look...

***well there are different shades of gold, its not QUITE as yellow in person, and actually it looks a lot like my old lamp oddly enough(seen in the pictures above)

as to \"bleaks\" im not sure what you mean?

and im really not liking the silver...it looks awful...i still cant get myself to understand where exactly i need each shade of grey, i either have too much dark or too much light, i havent found that medium yet

thanks!

Bleaks are rough white dots - points where light gets the metal to look almost white - this adds the shine for your mini ;)

This is my first nmm attempt - check out how much white I added to the plasma and the glove ;)

i cant decide...my gold looks like gold, but it doesnt look like anyone elses...it seems to glow/shine but not like others

like its not dull, but its not shiny either....its so weird...

i have bleached bone as the brighest, well i just added some white to see how it looked, it doesnt look much different

ill leave it for now i guess, and work on silver...my silver needs to change, its awful, and i cant let it be awful :)

maybe once ive actually painted i donno 50 models(ive only painted up like 20 models in my life...), i might be able to actually do silver hahaha

ok ill do some nmm on the henchmen, and post back later

It looks pretty good. Horazontal bits don\'t reflect the same way as other things. It caches the light and spreds it over the piece insted of catching individual rays.

IMO it\'s not a problem of contrast so much as a problem of hilight placement. They\'re still a very edge-hilighted sort of hilight. Needs to reflect (no pun intended) the way light would be striking a relatively flat surface. It\'s a bastard of a thing to get used to, but you have to get away from simply hilighting towards edges with NMM.

<edit>

Exactly what Angus was saying. For example, the armor that emulates his ribs would not have light pooling around the abs. There would be hilights diagonally, angled down towards the center of the model. It would be slightly curved because of the armor shape, of course.

It illustrates the point though. Man I wish I had a faster way of editing pics to show you :D Way too late tonight for Photoshop!

BTW I\'m what you might call an armchair NMM painter... I\'ve dabbled a tiny bit but concern myself more with the theory than actually trying it out on my own models :D

I wish I had the paints to do NMM, but I simply don\'t atm :( It looks so great! Your gold on the marine is awesome, leave it now! The metal looks cool too!

Great job, keep it up!

***ya i realised i was more or less highlighting, but it still looks gold...which is neat, im undecided on whether or not i want to do gold like this or more metal looking...

the staff, i originally had the line go all the way up and down but it didnt look right, ill have to look at some references for poles done in gold to see exactly why

thanks a bunch so far everyone!

***a shot of Torquemada and two henchmen...tweaked the one henchmens staff thingy, did some NMM on the green one(is my silver looking at al better?) the silver on the chain looks a bit better but its hard to tell in the photo it looks about the same

im debating another shade of highlight for the skin and the fur, i think i will for the fur, but the skin even though its mildly shaded looks like its supposed to

***ok i edited the picture smaller but photobucket is being silly and not updating its size...ill leave it for now, and it should change eventually, if not ill re-try

now that im starting to get happier with the silver work, ill actually get a noticeable amount painted so my wips dont all look the same!

ok do you think i should add more orange/yellow and lessen the red? its weird the red looks like red gore now, but its actually blood red!

also do you like the colour/idea? for his daemonhammer? i think it works well with the scheme doesnt overpower yet still stands out

Damn! I love it!

Make sure your blood red isn\'t too thinned down, the Red Gore will instantly take over if it is, trust me... :)

Get some brighter red to go with that, and maybe a tad of pure white to top it off (the yellow parts that is...)

I love your Gold NMM... wish I could do that... I got this thread as favorite for when I\'m gonna do gold NMM... great job ! :)

***well thing is, it WAS blood red until the oranges went on, then it kinda turned darker...cuz fo the brighter colours, so ya ok i think ill lighten it up a bit more, blend the oranges a bit better i can see some lines

alot of people said they love my gold, except the guys who paint NMM really well, im undecided, i like their gold, but i also like the way mine looks, they dont look the same, but mine looks gold, im unsure how metal it looks because it does shine, from a distance you can see it...its really weird, but neat :)

thanks for the comments, i think ill work that hammer more

I would add some white ;)
It needs some points where the light concentrates ;)
Looking great for now

this may help you

this is how the light highlights a metallics (blades in this case)

so you think brighter for silver...i have white on Torquemada, and the henchmen, but i need more? and i should have black in as well...ok...

i think its improving, i can notice it looks better on the hencmen(its kinda blurry a bit in the photo)

i think i know what you mean now, im going to make a couple minor adjustments as i finish these guys and try it with more lighting in mind(i did have a bit of an angle when i did torquemada, but maybe i can do it better on the enxt thing) maybe a Grey Knight or something

hahaha i have such a problem seeing this properly hahaha...*shakes head*
