Hmm hard to say :p
I recommend starting with something really dark :

Scorched brown, then add snakebite leatfer , then maybe codex grey , and at last some bubonic brown , this should make the base palish yellow ;)
Also try to use VMC Brown Glaze at the end and apply a heavy wash of it on the whole base.

This is how would I do it.

Ps never paint your minis on the base - now you will struggle to paint the cork black :/

The best way is to pain the mini on a cork itself , just like this here:

well he actually was just sitting on the cork in the picture, i attached him now, but hes easily removed :) i dont have the stands everyone else has yet...i should probably go to the store and grab some

but now i think theres something i could use: explanation of what to do with spots where light isnt hitting for example

ok, the hammer, lets say the matal part will be done NMM silver

how do i paint it? like i dont know what to do with the side not receiving light...leave it black? dark grey?

i have the same problem everywhere, i dont know what to do with dark space, thats probably why im not getting the effects you have mentioned i should try

OH actually hahaha just smoothened the hammer out actually, also someone made the brilliant idea to use brown on the handle, teal was too bright...brown looks nice

***the bird is going to be brown im using a photo reference to get the general colours and placemeent realistic...the fur is going to need touch ups and possibly one final highlight

annnd the base im really unsure how exactly to go with it, ive NEVER been good at bases....??? i need to use some patches of static grass(painting browny) to hide the seperation between the GS and the cork

and to hasmallum: i THINK i finally got the lighting effects right on the silver here, it looks to be my best so far....however im still unsure what to do with areas not hit by light...paint them dark grey? or kinda install a second source of light on the back too? cuz i guess i technically already did for gold and the cape....hmm

***gooooooooooooooooooooooooood i finally got silver! hahaha well...the majority of it

im going to leave gold the way it is on this mini but when i go to do gold on others ill do it differently

but the one questions is what to do with dark space...thats a problem i have on everything, the reason i have trouble painting round things

light source is front above...so how do i highlight things on his back? do i bring in an imaginary second light source?

because right now the back of the butt of the hammer is just like flat dark grey should i add another light source kinda, as i did highlight the cape and the gold on the back, it seems odd to not do the silver(and when i did the silver i didnt really know where to highlight either)

thanks a bunch so far!
