Trampier's Catoblepas

Ok, so first off, I was around here a lot years ago, but have been gone so long, I'm marked 'Newbie' again. Well, I'm back at my hobby bench & totally enjoying it! Here's something I started working on this morning, a classic Ral Partha AD&D Catoblepas that I found on Ebay:

First off, let me say that David Trampier has always been one of my favorite artists, (along with Brian Froud & Amadeo Modigliani, & many others.) For me, his ink drawings breathe life into the old school AD&D books. (His 'Wormy' series was lots of fun too.)

When I got the mini in the mail & popped it open, to be honest, I was kinda disappointed. It looked more like a cow than a hybrid warthog/brontosaurus like from the book. One of the best parts about the original artwork is all the knobby little felly-boppers around the ears & eyes. Also, the tusks are pathetically tiny on this model! (Yes, I understand the limits of molding, & I think it's still a nice model, just not true to the original vision.) I'll get to those in a post tomorrow, but for now, I'll just drill a bunch of holes in the head.

Catoblepas_Stock.jpg

Next, I decide the neck & tail are both way too short, nowhere near where they should be. And while it's a reasonable body size, it's just not in scale with today's models, not quite "six feet at the shoulder", so the feet get lopped off & drilled too.

Okay, drilling more holes & mixing epoxy. Heavy wire for the neck & tail; will bend them once it's cured. Finish nails for the feet.

There it is so far. Some of you are probably wondering, "If you're converting it so much, why not scratch-build it?" Well, I usually do better with a 'jumping off point', I guess. Others may consider it a shame to hack apart such a rare miniature, and yeah, I'm a collector, but I want it the way I want it, what else can I say.

As an aside, the text in the description just cracks me up:

"This nightmare creature is loathesome beyond description & has no redeeming features."

"Redeeming features"?!? It's a monster! What did you expect? 'This creature is just horrible, but a good speller! Plus, he makes a mean omelet! (Respect to the General)

So, there it is. Originally I was thinking of writing an article on conversions, but after seeing the level of articles here, (Shaun's OSL article is deep!) I decided a simple WIP would suffice. More tomorrow-

Day Two

Okay, spent some more time on my Catoblepas this morning; here's where it stands:
Catoblepas_Day2.jpg

And here's a close-up of the head so far.
Catoblepas_Wirehead.jpg

The more I do to this guy, the more that seems to beg to be lopped off, carved up, drilled out, & re-sculpted! I've taken lots of other photos as I go along, and have decided to make this into an article on extensive conversion when I'm done, never mind the fact that I feel totally mediocre next to so many of the painters on this site. Will keep you posted as it comes along.

I paint my thumb.
I remember having this guy in one of my games... the players made mince meat of him within minutes.
Damn powermonger players :(

Looking forward to seeing what you make of him after the butchery phase is over.

hey, i remember you! welcome back!

looks like this guy is gonna be weird!

Thanks, Freak! Yes, he'll be weird, but with any luck, it'll be somewhat close to Trampier's original. Here's a photo from my work on him this morning:

Spent a few hours working on the tail, neck, & face. The wrinkles took forever, but I'm getting that natural high seeing it come together; makes it easy to focus on. :good:

Love to hear any suggestions,

Really good. You did the wrinkles really well.
Thanks, Cheelfy, hopefully they'll paint up nicely, making them worth the effort.:snail:

How dare they! Let me guess; did he fail his "head lifting" roll? LOL, another bit about the description that cracks me up. Was thinking about this when sculpting the neck; wanted it to look plenty strong so as to whip that head around & zap fools with that death ray gaze! Also wanted the tail to look like it was really capable of clocking the chalk outta someone. Kinda reminds me of another project of mine, though a bit off-topic:

Tune in tomorrow for the next step: rearing the ugly head.

Hi Thrikeen, you're doing a great job of this Craptoblepas, surely one of the most derided monsters in AD&D? That picture takes me back, nicely drawn but so silly :D I don't think one's ever cropped up in a game I've played.

Your extensions really work well & the way it mirrors the illustration will be very nice for a photo side-by-side. I don't have any of the old rulebooks here, is there a colour description for him? Or is "loathesome beyond description" the only guide? Perhaps some Mandrill colouring, front & back :D

Cheers, B.

Thanks for the suggestions, B; there is no mention of colors in the rulebook, so I've got free reign in that department, (not that I limit myself there anyway.) Mandrills hadn't come to mind, but I like the idea. Of course, I *was* planning on using them for my Yeenogh model; we'll see what happens. The feet don't show in the picture either, but are described as being "short & stumpy, like a hippopotamus", so here's my latest snap of the progression:

Catoblepas040.jpg

I've sculpted up the feet, & done some work on the lips, snout, forehead, eyebrows, & throat areas. I'm pretty happy with the way it's coming along, yet I know there are some places I'll be revisiting once I give it a coat of primer, (that's when so many flaws first become apparent.) Thanks for the advice on blending areas, Freak.

Next, I've got some more tweaking to do on the face, the basing, & then it'll be time to scrub up before priming..

super cool wip. i love how how youve turned a fugly mini in to a perfect reflection of the artwork. really great. as far as colors go, id stay very dark and neutral, so that you can do some kick butt osl on the death ray eyes.
i am seriously impressed by the transformation you've achieved here, to spark new life in to this old dnd classic.

Thanks, FM; it's encouraging to hear your comments & suggestions! I've been trying to get a handle on OSL of late, but hadn't considered it for this piece. Was thinking of something like the eyes in your avatar, but darker, like blackish rubies. Hmm... OSL...

So, I took the day off yesterday to go tromping around on the coast with my friends, but back at the office today & taking a quick break to post an update:

Here's my figure primed up. As expected, I'm seeing lots of bits that need some polish & tweaking before it's ready to paint. The face isn't focused very well here, but you get the idea..

Because of my rather basic sculping skills, I am every time very impressed, what people can make of this glueish mud (putty). Really great work!

For the OSL:
I was asked to write a tutorial. It is in german. But perhaps it is helpful for you: http://www.das-bemalforum.de/kb.php?mode=article&k=50

It is surely not the best thing you can find in the net, but it is a little recipe by my, how to start with that issue.

Greetings, Taggi
