Transportation

Hi,

I\'m just getting back into painting after quite a long break.

The thing is, I\'m lucky enough to work for myself and have my own office.

I would like to be able to transport equipment and miniatures to and from work so I can do some painting during my \"quiet\" times.

Would anybody be able to recommend something which I could use to get my gear to work and back every day?

Seriously though, two issues...

1. Are you sure this is a good idea? I considered setting up a spare desk in my office so I could paint at lunchtimes but quickly realised that this could end up stealing a lot of what should be work-time. If you\'re self-employed and work alone this could be too much of a temptation. Depends on how self-disciplined you are though.
2. If you do want to move stuff back and forth, it would help to know how much stuff we\'re talming about, how you get to work (car, walk, bus etc) as different suggestions would be more suitable to different situations.

I like to think I\'m disciplined enough to just work during the times when I have nothing else to do. Like you say though, this could be a big temptation, willing to give it a try though!!

I did consider buying an extra set of gear just to take to work and leave there but I really can\'t justify the cost to the missus.

I drive to work and I\'m not looking to take everything with me every day. I was thinking that if I am working on a particular mini or group of minis, I would be able to take what I needed just for the job. Paints, brushes, tools, minis, but not everything I own.

As I have no dedicated painitng space at home I have to keep all my stuff in boxes to pack away after each session. I find that a couple of shallow boxes are ideal for the paints as I use GW paints and have the lid labels so I can see what I need from the tops of the pots. Brushes and palette live together in another small box. Any other tools, greenstuff, paint additives etc should be easy enough to pack and carry in the same way.

I guess your main issue would be around carrying minis without getting them chipped or damaged. If you\'re travelling by car this shouldn\'t be too hard - again shallow box or case with plenty of padding (cotton wool sheets, cloth etc). I would also advise keeping some minis at your office until they are finished and different ones to work from at home rather than transporting them continually back and forth. This would minimise the opportunities for accidents.

ps. would be interested to hear how you get on with resisting the temptation :twisted:

This sounds like a great idea - better than mindlessly surfing the internet during lunch break, that\'s for sure!

You could look into small bottles for storing smaller amounts of glue, retarder, magic wash solution etc., these can be had at art or craft stores. As for transporting it all, a small box or inexpensive briefcase would probably work. Or a wooden painter\'s box from the art store.

Thanks for tips.

I find it really difficult to paint at home, no spare rooms and 3 small kids running around.

The plan was not to move a mini once I had started it, it would stay in work until finished before I would take it home.

I\'ll keep you posted as to how much time I spend on the minis and how much time I actually \"work\".

Nice ideas, a trip to the local art store is on the cards.

The GW army carrying case works alright, the holes are big enough for paint pots and you can carry minis with you. They are a bit costy at £30 but you wont bash anything about.

try the local fishing supply or department store. Watch for deep Plano boxes:

You didn\'t say what paints you use. You\'ll need the deep one for RMS or Vellajo type dropper bottles. You can move the dividers around, add a bit of scrap foam for padding minis and your brushes and you\'re set.

I teach painting classes one night a week and carry a full set of RMS paints in 2 of these, along with brushes and the few odd bits & pieces.

Just get a cantilever or lift out tray toolbox from B&Q or Focus or somewhere. Plenty of room for your paints, tools, brushes and minis and best of all they\'re as cheap as chips.

I have several largish ones that I store all of my painting kit in.

Yea, iv got two toolboxs for my stuff, one full of paints and brushes, and minis that i am currently working on. And one for all my bits and pieces, mine only cost about £2 each from a Netto.

I knew someone that done this (painted at work). She was ok at first but then it all went wrong, she was definately doing more painting than work in the end and had to stop.
Still, she was always the first in the office!
