Transporting minis

I would love to know of the many ways in which people transport their minis to places. e.g GD etc
Because i am making a more fragile and delicate piece this year, i dont want it to brake on my way up.
Anyone have some cool ways to carry them?

Thanks,
Tommy

We have a store here called \"Kalli\'s Schnäppchenmarkt\" (somewhat like \"Kalli\'s Discount store\" if I would translate it). They sell little... plastic... thingies... well, basically, it is somewhat of a round container with a screw top. I have no idea at all what they are supposed to be used for. They sell for 5 Cent a piece, leak on every spot imaginable, come in a dirty off-white creamish colour and for some reason they are always dirty and crusted with glue. But they are cheap and the screw top will never open accidently, or even if you try to open it, for that matter. I filled them with some foam out of my old broken computer chair and now one container holds about 2 to 3 minis and can take any bump you expose them to. Seriously, I dropped a suitcase on one and it did not even crack (neither the suitcase nor the container, that is). Might be a pain for Warhammer, but it\'s nice for Confrontation or single minis.

Other than that... shoe box, a cushion and a fool\'s hope ;)

I transport mine in plastic containers left over from chinese new year...... they are made of hard plastic, have a screw on top that even comes with a nifty handle that I can carry around.....

But I think a small metal biscult tin padded with foam or some kinda padding also works.

Those little pieces of expanded polystyrene that is used as packing material... wonderful stuff for fragile minis. Place the mini in a box and fill the box with little balls of polystyrene. The mini doesn\'t move and is well protected without any particular pressure at any point on it.

Mini sandwitches

I take two small pieces of foam about 1\" to 1.5\" thick. I cut a depression in each side of the foam to custom-fit the mini, and put the mini in the depression.

I have a \"pattern\" for small boxes, and I cut a custom box for each \"sandwitch\".

Received a custom order where the artist did me one better - he put a small piece of chamiose between the mini and the foam.

You might go to a jewlery store and pretend you are shopping for Lladro or some other porcelin collectable. Then have them show you a couple in the boxes. Look at how those boxes are constructed. That\'s what I use as the basis for making stuff to transport my minis.

you could use any of the myriad of figure cases on the market and cut the foam to size, but packing them individually is defenitely saver, not to mention easier for unpacking them at GDs...;)

I had a nightmare transporting a Fell Beast and a FW Vulture to GD last year, and spent the whole day lugging the case around that I had brought them in. Plus the case was so big I was asked to open it up on entry to the arena to prove it was not some kind of explosive device lol

So this year I have vowed to produce only small pieces.
Where can you get those cases that they always have on TV shows that have foam in that perfectly matches the shape of the things inside it? That would be sooooo cool ;)

1) buy a gun case
2) buy extra foam pieces
3) cut the extra foam pieces to size
4) pray you don\'t get stopped again. lol

My beef with cases like the GW ones is that if your piece has small, delicate bits laying them down in a case like that can break the bits off. Happened to my fairy. :(

For stuff with bits like that, I\'d prefer a custom-fit piece, that either leaves space around the bits or is custom fit to support them, depending on which would work best. Something like the Army Transport cases with lots of free space around the mini can also work well.

Here is a basic idea I have seen used for other hobby craft before.

Get a rubbermade/tupperware container that is plenty large enough to hold the mini. Build a strap or clip into the inside of the lid. Use the strap/clip to hold the mini\'s base to the inside of the lid. Close the container using the lid as the base and the container as the lid.

As long as your mounting clip or strap is solid, you now have a totally safe container for your mini. You don\'t have any foam actually touching the mini, so no blemishes from carrying it. As well, you can look into it (assuming it is a clear container) and don\'t have to handle it or let others handle it when they are rummaging thru your stuff looking for a bomb!!!

My favorite way: Make custom boxes from cardboard, or use the little kind scented candle come in and put tissue paper around the minis.

In the real world: you\'ll have to take the minis out so the security agents can fiddle with them, breaking them in the process and undo the packaging it took you 2 hours to complete when your flight arrives in 5 minutes.

Solution - Arrive at airport early for flight - then cuss at security all the way to destination for damage done to minis

We still have the death penalty in Texas, and if the current Presidential adminstration is any indication of the Texan judical system, They\'d at least shin you for cursing an officer.

Um Chrispy, I know that, since I live in that political hotbed of Texas, that the death penalty is legal. And if you wait until they are down the hall from you or you are on the plane, how can the hear you, let alone shin you?
lol
