Treasure Chest Diorama

I found this treasure chest from Rackham a few months ago, and have finally gotten around to using it. The best part about it is that it comes with about 8 different treasure inserts, including one that only has a rat in it for the unlucky adventurer. I bought it for my D&D group, so I can tempt my party with a visual goal so they\'ll ignore my orcs that are about to kill them all Mwa-hahahahaha:twisted:

Ahem... sorry. Anyway, for this first diorama (there are 2 chests in the set) I wanted to make it look like the chest had been dug up from beneath a stone floor. I started with a 50mm Warmachines base. Epoxy Scuplt was used to create the stone slabs, and I used a piece of quartz from my yard to impress some texture. I also sculpted out a hole from which the chest was excavated:

Here\'s the treasure chest sitting on the base. Only the wood grain is finished- I haven\'t done the lock or hinges yet. I\'m going to pin it in place when I\'m ready for full assembly:

The hole isn\'t finished yet- I\'m trying to paint it to force perspective so it looks deeper than it is. I\'m also going to work up highlights on the edges to a dark sand color.

I really like the look of the stone, but something just doesn\'t seem right about it. Any suggestions? C&C is very welcome!

Tell me about your flooring.

You sem to think something is off, and the floor seems to be the big problem.

I assume since the hole in the ground, this is underground and supposed to be dark.

Can\'t really see what is up with the hole because of how dark it is. If there is epoxy in there to simulate water, then maybe painting it is all you can do. If nothing is in the hole yet, you may with the paint a blue mix into the hole giving a bit of the water color. Or brown depending on the effect you want.

Then come up from the sides ofr the water area and paint nearer the top of the hole the ground color you want.

Then mix some clear epoxy and fill for your water.

That aside, back to the floor itself. What seems off here is the color. It is nice and dark, but just a bit too dark. Maybe a really dry brush of white over the highest peaks will net a better look for the stones. Also you may not wish to have the ground black between them.

Maybe first try doing something for the grout lines between the floor tiles to see if you can lighten it up.

Take the dark grey you used and mix a bit of that in with the lightest grey you used and paint lightly between the tiles and see how that works if you want to check that first before trying to mes with the water area, or the highlighting of the tiles.
