Tree base + lathiem.

Hey guys, I got a few minis in(lathiem, Horthak[30mm] and Beelphegor [30mm]) and im going to paint them up once i get my new brushes, but i\'ve been working on their bases in the mean while. By the way, i was quite upset when i got my lathiem, his foot broke off, and so did his left leg.. i was like lol and then greenstuffed everything back on. It looked like there was some defect in the cast. Oh well. I still was excited that i got the model
Anyways, here are some pics, Critique and comments are welcomed.

By the way, i built myself a light box. NOT amazing... but does the job!

ALSO! on a side note, i tried a new polishing technique for the mini, to make it SHINY! :drool:

and after you sandpaper/steel wool it, go and take a tooth brush, with some soapy water and scrub it. AFTER THAT! i waited like a day cause i didn\'t actually know i was going to do this, i noticed there was steal some mould release on it.. sooooo i took some cold water and my tooth brush and scrubbed again. BUT i wiped the brush off before scrubbing as to not overload it with water.

Made it nice and shiny

looking good.. strange you had a problem with the cast never had anything like that from Enigma..
Anyways I like the look of the groundwork .. One little thing I notice is . wach where your sand goes ..The side of the base has grains all over the shop. They really can spoil the overall effect of a piece so take some care there..

I had quite a problem with a bit of shitty cast of this mini too.. All the other stuff i have had from them has been great quality though.

We got ours at a simelar time too..

Mine had a large amount of thick flash (like a few mm thick)

Same here, like the space between the arm and the weapon was just a chunk of metal. i didn\'t even know it was flash until i looked at a photo and was like, \"THERES SUPPOSED TO BE A SPACE THERE!\"

so yah.. Oh well, still a great mini!

Exactly the same here, was probs just a duff casting.

I had to drill it because it was too thick for a knife to cut trhough,

I was able to get it with a knife, but i ended up cutting myself in the process! oh well.. it all came off, but the only thing that sucks about it, is now when you look at the arm from a certain angle it looks funny Good thing noone really looks at models from that angle!

But yah, i thought the base came out nice, Got all those little things off, i like the neautrality of it. Compared to what im going to paint the mini, the base is a little dull, and will allow the mini to stand out. This is my first scenic base by the way.. never mentioned that before!

Looking nice, Is the tree a real twig ? Looks like it to me.
Dunno if you considered this finished, I would say a little more washing and drybrushing might be in order. Some spots show too much black and the dark/bluegreen areas need some highlights.
Maybe add a couple contrasting bits (brown,reds) would help. Right now it really looks damp and cold, more wetland-ish than forest-ish.

Edit: If you try to crop and resize the pics to max 600pix before putting them on, it would make the reading of this thread easier.

ALRIGHT! Everything is resized and cropped. I added some more browns to it.. and highlighted a little more of the green aswell. (can\'t see that in the photos since i haven\'t taken a pic of this yet)

As it is I\'d suggest working some washes into the areas where the spots are showing.
Jakob Neilsens tutorial is a great way of creating an effective base.
