Troll Impalers (Any Advice?)

Hey gang,

Here are my first two Hordes models. I\'m still working on the backpacks for these fine Troll fellows. However, they are mostly finished.

What do you think? Any suggestions? All comments would be appreciated as this is the first time I\'ve done NMM on this scale. Thanks.

@freakinacage: Thank you for the reply, I was begining to wonder if I had offended the CMON community. Anything you notice or can offer helpful advice on would be much appreciated, I\'m just looking for feedback from the community.

Thanks.

Looks great to me :) The shadows in the photo make it look a bit patchy and weird though, unless you have a good peer at it. Better photos would help. Only things I could recommend are upping the contrast on the NMM arm-guards and redefining some of the bandages.

Looks great to me. Personally I like some strong(er) hair colors on these.
The NMM parts look very well done.

Thanks for the feedback gang!

Regarding NMM do you take the highlights all the way up to white in large areas or just on fine points like spikes or spear tips?

My g/f suggested that I actually pull back further away when I take my photos, so I think I\'ll be doing that to help with some clarity issues in my photo lighting continues to be an issue due to current living situation. ugh.

@DaN
So far my mini\'s have been scoring in the 5-6 range so I don\'t feel like I\'m showing off much of anything. Just trying to elevate my level. However, I\'ll take it as a compliment that you think I have something worth showing off about. Thanks man. :D

Okay, so I finally got away from a commision project for a friend and I\'m back to my trolls. Here\'s the update. I finished the backpacks and added them. I\'m looking for final advice before basing. Also, if you see something I need to work on for my next model please point it out. Finally, this is my first serious attempt at NMM so please give any advice you think might help.

Critique Time

Alrighty Pez . . . first let me say that I love the color choices you used. The colors are great! You\'ve got a nice reddish brown and cream color used for the softer underbelly! (great use of warm colors) and you have the warm colors offset by cooler colors such as the greens and colors used in the NMM it looks like. So very nicely done!

I think it\'s always important to have warm and cool tones in a mini, it really helps the color stand out!

You\'re painting is definitely solid! You should be very pleased with your results overall. Many people would kill to be able to crank out trolls that look as good as these! Gold star for Pez!

Now things to work on . . . really at this point it\'s just refining your brush work and maybe paint dilution. It looks like the paint is still going on a bit thick for highlights as there are areas where they seem to be in stark contrast to the rest of the area. So try thinning out your highlights a bit more, blend the transitions from shadow to highlight too using glazes. That\'s how I do it, it really helps to keep the transition into the lighter colors a bit smoother without getting chalky highlights.

Do you currently paint from your darkest shade to your lightest? If so, try working with a midtone basecoat first and then adding shadows and highlights. I\'ve started doing this a few months back actually and I\'m getting way better results because the paint is easier to control.

Otherwise the only other critique is that we need to get you more lamps for photos! :D

Thanks Meg.
Wow, that was a lot more positive than I was expecting.

As for shading, yea, I know I need to thin my highlights more and stay consistent. I get anxious to see results and crank out the final highlight. (shame on me)
I don\'t consitantly work from a mid tone or a base dark tone. For example, the spear in hand was a mid tone worked up and down (highlight and shadow respectivly), and the spears on his back were taken up from a dark base. I struggle with getting a nice crisp line on my highlights when I use a properly thin paint. What\'s the trick?

I have to admit to doing A LOT of experimentation on these guys.

Once again, thanks for the all the good advice to look out for. I\'m starting on Yvonka from the Dark Age line so I\'ll be applying what I can from this.

P.S. I can\'t wait to move to get some new lamps! ugh.

Hey pez...I second what meg said. You have a nicely painted couple of models here. If you are just going for best painted army in a tournament or something, you have a pretty darn good chance of winning! Now if you want to take the next step and go on to more display type models, first be prepared to spend a lot more time on each model. As you get better with your blending technique, you will find that you get a lot quicker and can have a model done in 15 to 30 hours but at first it could easily be 50 to 100 hours per model. Work on those blends. Find yourself a nice model with a big ol cape or some large surface that will allow you to practice and just start laying glazes down. Watch how the pigment lays down, and at what dilution. (also, the dilution of the paint will vary for each effect you are trying to creat. A blended area will be far more diluted than say an area of freehand or if your doing the final line type highlight on something. That will have barely any extra water at all.) You will also find that if you work the paint in a little, it will lay down more evenly. What I mean is dont just do one brush stroke and let it dry. I usually put the paint on, and then lick off my brush or clean it real quick and then kind of massage the paint in to the area I\'m blending. You will also benefit from learning how to push and pull the pigment. If you put some thinned down paint (20% paint to 80% water) onto a flat surface. Practice pushing it around with the flat edge of your brush. Also practice using different amounts of pressure on your brush as you paint. You can actually facilitate a nice blend just by easing up on the brush pressure. (the more pressure you have on the brush, the less pigment it allows out..as you put the brush ease up on the pressure and it will deposit more pigment. Again, its a touch thing but once you master it, it comes in very handy. I am working on a blending step by step thingy and I will pm ya when I have it done. Hopefully it will help.
As for the nnm, it looks nice for army type painting. If you want to take it up a few levels, I would suggest looking for ideas in the gallery her on cmon. The trick to good nnm is a very fast dark to light transition. thats what makes it look so shiny. You also need good smooth blends to pull it off. Practice that blending!!! In the end, you are on the right track. Your color selection is very good (I love the skin) All you have to work on now is technique! You should also try to go to conventions if you can...I know Kubla Con is coming up. Seeing other peoples work up close is a great way to get motivated...see where you need to go and what you need to do to get there! Anyways, keep doing what your doing, your on the right track fo sho! I\'ll be watching for updates...I\'d like to see these guys with finished bases!!

@ a-dizzle ??? (where did that come from?)

Thanks SO much for the feedback. I had a sinking suspicion that thinning and slowing down my blends would be the point of work. It\'s great to know that I\'m on the right track though. I\'ll be at Kubla since it\'s the nearest Con to me... at leaste the nearest Con worth going to.

I finished the bases on these guys and I\'m hoping to get a reasonably good photo to post by this weekend. The bases are nothing amazing. Some flock, some rock, and out the doh\'.

thanks again. :)

There is a good group up there called the inner circle I think. They will be at Kublacon. There should be lots of nice models to check out!! Anyways, keep practicing and keep asking questions!!!:D

nicely done Pez, you should be proud of your work.

As for the photos I can\'t really give too much comment past what I\'ve already interjected as I don\'t have the models in hand.

However, there seems to be a tungsten effect on the pictures. Does your camera have any settings to get rid of the yellowy/orange tinge that I\'m seeing?

@fieldarchy:
You know what, it\'s actually the g/f\'s camera... I\'m going to have to bust out the manuel and figure it out I think. Thanks for the feedback, I\'m anxious to get something new going that you and ollie can help walk me through a little more methodically.
