Truly limited run minis?

How do you know/find limited run miniatures? I am trying to figure out how I know the ones that will never have a re-cast/reprint done, vs the ones that are limited in resin and then re-printed in plastic.

I think it would be fun to add a small "collectors" section to my miniatures collection, so was just trying to figure out what makes them collectible vs a mini that everyone can come back and buy later.

Thanks.

(P.S. It may be that this does not exist in the miniatures world like it does for other collectible hobbies. I just don't know)

The only REALLY limited pieces are those of companies that went out of business. For example german brand Assassin miniatures released only limited runs of their miniatures. Of those you can be sure they will never be recast...

Other ways: Get miniatures exclusively sculpted for you and make sure you own the rights. You decide how many get made and who gets them. With active companies you never can be sure they won't release a recast or very similar miniature someday.

Good way to receive limited miniatures is on conventions, where you may get a mini specially made for that occasion. These are often very limited (and crap!), most won't be recast since there is no company behind them. Obviously this is not true for GW conventions.

Have a look around and look into smaller manufacturers. Many of them do limited runs of their miniatures, at least on the paper.

how to find limited minis? Either by following blogs or cmon's forums/galleries:
- Some painters get samples before a LE run is released by a sculptor and if you follow their work you get to know what comes out in the future.
- Sometime they are advertised here in the forums (last one was the Hailey Smith: Cat Suit from wonderlands project) or under the pictures in the gallery (this is how I got to know about origenarts and their minis for example)

About reprints: you can never be sure. And frankly I think it's better if they do limited runs. Stopping after X minis is good only for illegal recasters and ebay-sharks who buy a lot, then sell all at 4-5-10x price.

What do you mean about "collectors" section? Minis that are not for gaming and look really good ? If yes, then it doesn't have to be a LE from a company. It can be any single mini that catches your fancy, even things like a character/unit from another army from the game you play, or even a mini painted by a friend.

yes they are. Not officially, but if you go to a model-show you can find recasts for a lot of the companies and not only chinese ones.

Alright, copies you may find of everything that is really wanted. As soon as people start looking for special items and start throwing money at them there will be copies. This makes it possible for ANY mini to be duplicated. What I thought of were "official" recasts by the ones that hold the rights.

I want to thank everyone for the information. I forgot about illegal re casters, so it does make sense to not have such limited runs.

The convention miniatures and GW is what caused me to ask actually. I have a White Dwarf 2014 miniatures that is sometimes on GW's website and sometimes not. So I started to think there where "collectible" miniatures and gaming miniatures. Sounds like I just need to go through the shop and start picking fun ones to paint randomly :)

An additional thank you to Schwarz-Brot for the ME link in the sig. Now I have to go see if I have miniatures to send.
