Tris,

For the dots maybe use some kind of stencil, like a small piece of paper with hole punched through it. You'd need to be able to rest the mini on your table (unless you have a third hand). That's how I'd try to start with anyway. My dad used to have an old leather punch with a heap of different cutting tips that would do holes from around 1mm up to about the same size as you use for punching paper to keep in a ring binder.

I am not sure about size, but maybe a pencil eraser, or a clay shaper? You would just have to be steady, and maybe do some touch up. But better than freehand.

Thanks guys. I'm planning on doing the dress as green with white polka dots, so it's kind of important to get the dots consistent. Which freehand, or at least my freehand, is not.

For the dots, I would say figure out your grid for all your rows of dots then maybe using guides would work. depending on how big you wanted them you could maybe use the blunt end of a brush in thinned paint and try putting guides on that way...might help keep it more consistent.

This project is looking great, don't know if I'd have the guts to go so large. Keep at it!

i WOULD SUGGEST A GRID AS WELL. iF YOU MAKE A CHECKERED PATTERN WITH A SHARP PENCIL very LIGHTLY, YOU CAN ADD DOTS WHERE THE LINES INTERSECT.

Now, next to that I would be less frightened in the morning. Good job.

Looking good Trys! A pencil marking your dots will let you know if you have them even. Depending on scale, you might even be able to use a Micron pen to fill them in. You're going to want something that doesn't flex like a brush does to make them nice and even.

Ever have one of those days where the paint just isn't cooperating?

That was yesterday. I was finally able to get paint on a mini, and it was a disaster.
I was working on the stockings. Now I knew it was going to be a bit rough, since I haven't done sheer before.
I took the skin color, thinned it down, and tried to build up color slowly. No go. The paint pigment wasn't dense enough, causing it to look spotty. So I painted over the black with flesh, intending to work back down to black. Guess what. The black went on unevenly too. Both GW black wash and thinned P3 black. So I painted back up to flesh, and am going to have to actually blend down. I'm going to have to do some experimenting to get the colors right, but not on the mini. I've already started to build up some paint, but luckily at this point it will just add some texture to the stockings.

Argh.

Sheer stockings, not something you paint often...havnt seen a marine in them yet lol.

There is a guide in the article section on sheer clothing in general, at the bottom he covers stockings.

When i get manly enough to try my own pinup, i think airbrushing them would be the way to go

Ya know hun - this is when pigments would pay off in droves. ;)

You've already got the flesh base on there. Black pigment and light application with a brush, then seal. You may get the effect you want in just one layer but if you don't you'll probably get it on the second and I definitely don't see it going over three.

Black pan pastel would work too.

Over 6 months since I've posted in this thread? Isn't that against some rule? Haha.

Anyways, I picked up a brush again a few weeks ago, since the local GW store has a monthly painting competition called Brotherhood of the Brush. I didn't want to warm up on any of my awesome minis, so I used that as an excuse. It was a bit of a rush job, doing almost all of the work in less than a week, but thanks to weak competition (only one other entry lol) I won. So there's that. I don't have pics, but when I get my mini back from the GW store I'll take some.

*edit*

Found a pic, but beware it's poorly balanced.

Cool! Great job on the win!

He's purple? Okay, he's purple! lol! Good to see you haven't changed with the OMG! Deadline! Paint! Paint! Paint. :D

BTW - WAMP is having a Dark Sword Game of Thrones contest, judged by George R.R. Martin, himself! *hint, hint!*

I love the show (and the books!), but not a huge fan of the minis. Besides, I don't need ANOTHER painting contest to put off until the last moment. I'm working on Vlad for this month's Brotherhood, and I still want to try and find something to finish for GD.

As for Skeletor there, I wanted to go with an emperor's children purple/gold look, and didn't like any of the heads that came in the box. I also cut off the spikes when they were the only things left to paint because I was tired lol

lol! Hey, you owe me for hanging me out to dry on the Kingdom of Death contest. :p You talked me into it, I bought the mini, even had to get a replacement cause the first one was whacked and you up and disappeared on me.

I'm not a huge fan of the minis either. But I do like a couple of them - Lannister Lady in Waiting #1 is one of them. Bronn isn't bad and I'm wondering if I can CM Eddard to actually look like Sean Bean. Damn shame Eddard died. I had gotten that far in the audio books but in the AB the scene was from Ara's point of view and she never actually saw him die so I held out a tiny bit of hope.

Oh and while you were gone got HBO so I'm all caught up on the series and enjoying season two thankyouverymuch! lol! I stopped the books there because I started watching the series and was worried that it wouldn't stand up (they did a pretty good job though). But I'll probably hold off on the books until season two is over. lol!
