TrystanGST's WIP thread

I wish I had an update for you guys, but this session wasn't really productive. I started tackling the skin, but I can't for the life of me figure out how the guy did his, so I just started my own version. Unfortunately, it looks like rhino skin at the moment, which isn't quite what I was going for. So I may have to go back and basecoat again.

On a side note, I passed 10000 minis voted on. So at least there's that.

Haha.

So I went back to the Jen Haley DVD for inspiration, since on it she paints a freebooter demoness in a cool greyish flesh tone. Of course I don't have any of the colors she used, nor anything even close. So much for that idea. Luckily, I dug thru my paint stash and found a combo I liked. The base is a mix of Charadon Granite and Rotting Flesh. It's a bit more green tinged than the pics show. Of course, it sucks to have to mix your base coat, but sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

With that grey-ish skin and those vents on his back, it makes him look somewhat shark-like. It's good, different.

No pics to add yet - skin basecoating continues. Man this thing has a lot of skin. It's actually going to make or break this mini, depending on if I can get a coherent look. Also, I think I'm going to have to go with a light color for the horns to get some balance to all the dark greys and coppers that dominate the sarcophagus.

Thanks 10. The pics still aren't showing the true tint of that base coat.
This is pretty close:

I can honestly say that when this is done, it's going to be my best to date. I'm really enjoying the process, and am pushing myself in a bunch of new directions.

Well on a quick side note, I picked up some Vallejo Glazing Medium and Metallic Medium. I can't wait to try those.
Back to the matter at hand - basecoat is 95% done, but I went ahead and started shading to get a feel for what it'll look like. What do you think?

Looking very cool. Is the latest picture closer to the actual skin tone? Everything seems to be coming together nicely. What are you going to do with the base? I feel like he needs something suitably epic to go along with the rest of the figure. :)

If you blended the skin tones so they went from green in the centre to a dark red at the periphery, it would add some variation - but it might draw the eye away from the face which would be a shame.

Maybe alternatively some glowing blue vein traces leading in towards the centre? Kind of 'daemonic energy' radiating out from the head to tie the face to the rest of the body.

Love the skin colour mate. If imitation is the highest form of flattery then be flattered! I have one of these lined up and i will try this for the skin i think. Cant wait to see the finished product.

Bailey - I do have a rather great idea for the base, but I'm not going to reveal it just yet. ;)
Boss - blue veins. That's a great idea actually. I have been thinking of a way to break up the large swathes of skin, and that may be worth a shot.
