Turning \"BORING\" into a work of art

Hi Folks,

This is a kinda follow up from the \"suggest fig to newbie painter\" thread...... Finn17 brought up something that was rather interesting.... it went like this....

While discussing whether space marines or orks or dire wolves would make a better starting fig, it was suggested that perhaps, turning a completely unconverted space marine fig into a work of art would be a true challenge for painters..... what d you all think? Think it might be a good idea to have a \"Turn \"Boring\" into a work of art\" contest?

Well I think it\'s a cool idea for a competition... something like the CMON contest, but without conversions...

If conversions are not allowed then I think the only way of standing out between the good and very good (regular) paintjobs is freehand painting on eg. the shoulder pads.

Well, if you want boring you can\'t do better than the SMs that come in the SM paint set.
I like the idea, and I\'ve got those minis.
I was going to just paint them for my chapter, but maybe I\'ll go crazy on one of them....

Not a bad idea at all, and since I found like 30 unassembled Marines in the closet a while back, I could easily part with one. Now all I have to do is decide which chapter to do... :)

I hope I\'m not to blame for all this...

First off I can\'t take part \'cos all my stuff is in storage and I am at least 1000 miles away from everything I need to be able to paint - this wont make any difference whatsoever \'cos I am totally sausage-fingered:flip: and am happy to admit that I am not in remotely the same league as almost all the CMON members.

This does sound like an excellent idea however, and it could be a fascinating exercise? There is a real need for ground rules however, you know that already, don\'t you?

Before everyone gets totally tied up with rules etc. the idea I originally had in mind was to take the most boring figure you could think of and turn it into something special. Points should be lost therefore, for anyone who tries to take a relatively interesting figure, (sergeant, assault, special weapon etc) and makes it more interesting. IMO the skill is in VALUE ADDED.

Other possible points for contention:

Basing: I would suggest standard GW - Goblin Green - vegetation etc. at one\'s own peril. The idea is. \'simple is efficient\'.

Figure: Tactical SMs seem the only choice. Anything with a banner/HGG (huge great gun) etc. is clearly stepping outside the spirit of the exercise.

Chapter: I am going to tempt fate here and suggest that if everyone is limiting themselves in so many other ways then Chapter should be an irrelevancy. We are painters, we can create and design and inspire. I see no reason to be shackled by GWs limited imagination. To my mind the whole point of such an exercise is to demonstrate skill and mastery of one\'s craft. As painters we should at least control the colour scheme. This is not to say that standard chapters are to be discouraged. I think everyone should feel free to experiment!!

Voting: This could be a real problem!! GW fan boys/girls could flame non-standard livery. No point in not exposing examples to public gaze however. A risk everyone faces?

Prize: It would be nice to have a prize. It should be within the spirit of the exercise however (ie small). e.g. All involved (including non-participants such as myself) send a pot of (new) paint? An exercise in trust perhaps?

Voting criteria: I am not sure I agree with Corvus that discrimination between minis would be down to freehand art on shoulder pads etc. IMO the level of blending etc. is also a major player... plus... if everyone were to agree the originality of the paint job should also play a major role.

MAJOR POINT TO RESOLVE:
stick to chapter colours or go \'freestyle\' . Personally, I would regard this as an opportunity to demonstrate your skill - either as a master painter of GW chapter colours or as an originator. Personally, I would also watch GW like a hawk to ensure they didn\'t subsequently nick my idea!

Whilst being unable (and possibly unworthy) to participate I would be happy to contribute in other ways.

......

Regarding the major point of contention, I think painters should be allowed to either freestyle or paint chapter colours..... it frees up the contest.....

With regards to the model, perhaps a picture of what the basic SM we are all talking about should be put up.... for the sake of consistancy.....also... er I dont paint SMs so I dont really know the differences between the models... and what would be considered a \"big gun\".

And, if we are goin ahead with this, I am wondering what we are gonna use for voting and such.....

I suggest:

1. perhaps we can post the pics up on CMON and then repost links in a special SM painting contest thread, it sorta acts like a contest home page so we can view the progress and vote for the other figs in the contest.

I kinda know this exposes the participants to votes by fanboys/gals but I do think everyone should have a chance to have a vote, even the fans....

2. Have a contest dateline....

3. I kinda like the \"sending a pot of paint\" idea for a prize......its a nice gesture in a competition between friends... :)

what d ya all think?

I think you\'re all mad. Mad I tell yer, mad!

I want in!

I think this is the perfect leveller, a way of seeing the skills people have outside of converting, swapping, sculpting onto and basing minis in an impressive way. They are all skills in themsleves, but painting a straight/standard piece is the perfect way to go to show relative strengths and weaknesses. If we all comment on each other in a productive way, we can help each other too. Sometimes conversions and other attachments can mask painting styles and all that, so a straight piece sounds brill!

Sign me up!

Finn, my Cornish pal. Where are you? Could you be the referee or moderator on this whole idea?

Marvellous.

Cor I\'m excited!

Rev :innocent:

Cool idea

This sounds like a cracking idea.

How about using the poll buttons for people to vote with? The pics could be posted on one thread and voting done on a separate one.

A pic of the type of model up for painting would be a good idea as previously suggested.

Can\'t wait to see this happen lol

This is a great idea, but not reachable, since you can have about 10 diff. poll-buttons, what if more people post their pic? And a diff. thread for each SM would be spamming :D

Happy to help in any way I can...

Seems like this has really generated a lot of interest. I really wish a) I could post a picture of the mini I bought which sparked this idea and b) have a go myself. But to answer Rev\'s question about where I am is a long story. I have a house in Portsmouth which is for sale and I am renting another house in Cornwall. 95% of everything I own is currently in storage and I am currently having to access my computer largely through remote access. I know some of you guys would take all your gear on the space shuttle but I wasn\'t as forward thinking as all that. Needs must as the devil drives etc.

I think it would be very difficult to post a pic of the mini up for painting as there is gonna be some slight variation. I think the basic idea still boils down to:

1) Standard tactical space marine. Metal/plastic, age largely immaterial. Paint it in chapter colours if desired. Design your own colour scheme if you want. People who are inventive will be punished by fan boys/girls and rewarded by others. I think this will even itself out.
Basically no special marines ie; Scouts, headquarters, terminators, techmarines, devastators, accountants, quantity surveyors etc. If in doubt post a pic of the marine in question and ASK!
It\'s just occurred that even amongst standard tactical marines there is a large amount of variation. Old \'Beakies\' IMO have a lot of character not present in modern plastic versions for instance. There has to be some creative leeway however, \'cos not every one is gonna be able to get their hands on exactly the same mini.

2) Bog standard base. Standard, round 25mm slottabase painted in \'official goblin green (or a close approximation). Further elaboration is up to the individual artist but largely discouraged. Small decoration, static grass, small stones etc. is in keeping with the nature of the contest but anything elaborate is likely to look stupid on a standard base and marks will suffer.

3) This is a real \'friendly\' in every sense of the word and every contestant should comment (positively, but not necessarily ingratiatingly) on every one else\'s entry.

4) How do we all keep in touch? A possible solution is for everyone to let (Oh God! it\'s gonna be me isn\'t it...?) sigh..me know when they post an entry. I suppose I could keep a list of people who want a stab at this and let every one else know when an entry has been posted.

5) I\'m largely thinking out loud now...IF people want to do this and, IF people want me to coordinate/moderate etc they will have to let me know. PM me or email at: steveapted@aol.com.

6) The whole idea, to reiterate, was to try and take the boring and make it interesting. For most of us there is possibly nothing more boring than a standard SM. So how do you make a bog SM interesting? That, my friends, is the challenge:bouncy:
