Two Different Orcs...

Ok people I need some help here. I working on a savage orc tournament army (Yes you heard that right, but I\'m digressing). But I\'m having trouble deciding how I want to do the skintone and would like some feedback please.

Both were primed white.
Orc #1 was simply given an ink wash afterwards.
Orc #2 is more layered with a basecoat of snot green, a highlight of goblin green mixed with snot green. and the front areas were given a final highlight of scorpion green*.
What I need to know more than anything is which would work better. comments please.

*Which looks a LOT more like real green snot than snot green but again I\'m digressing.

If you are asking simply which one is better looking, I\'ll go with 2. BUT...why not incorporate both? Slight variations in skin tone add a definate bit of realism to the orcs. Humans rarely have exactly the same tone, I\'d imagine orcs being the same.

It also makes the different ones a bit more individualistic, which I like.

Seriously I\'m planning on doing about NINETY of these guys! Do you know how crazy changing the skin tone\'ll make me? Seriously I don\'t need the help! ;)

Sorry, didn\'t mean to sound like a jerk. But i\'m not kidding when I said I\'m gonna do at least NINETY of these guys. Your suggestion scared several years out of my life.

Fom the sounds of it, looks like number 2 it is. Thanks (really this time).

I prefer \"2\" too.

Supervike has a point though...

Before you go crazy at the prospect, if you\'re doing rank & file why not do the majority like \"2\" then do something a little \"extra\" with miniatures that are going on the front rank of units and, of course, the Command figures?

Just a thought :)

I don\'t think supervike was suggesting that you give each orc a unique skin tone, just that you mix it up a little by doing some like #1 and some like #2.

Considering that your #1 is just an ink wash you could save some serious time by following supervike\'s suggestion. Do 2/3 with the layered approach, 1/3 with the ink wash. With 90 of them the overall impression will be just as good as if you\'d done all of them with layers. And you\'ll get a nice visual variation if you make sure all your groups consist of both layered and washed orcs.

No, I was just thinking of slight variations. If you are going to do 90 maybe do them in groups of 30, each having the same skin tone (like #2). The other groups of 30 could have there own tone. Once you mixed and matched them all at the end, you\'d have nice variations.

I was thinking more along the lines of how the PAINT-AID army turned out. With both the Ogres and the Gnoblars the skin tones had plenty of interesting variation.

BUT...I understand the logistics of the whole thing. Like I said before, I like #2 the best! You\'d better get painting....:D

And they WILL have invidual tattoos, just not very many. Since I NEVER make the ward saves they provide I\'m not doing a lot of warpaint except for champions and characters.

And I think I\'ll do that last idea Vike, might keep the painting from being two tedious.

is a whole new set of challenges.

I tried it off and on with my Orcs, and have only managed to finish off about 8 of them.

I also have a Beastman, Ogre, Vampire Counts, High Elf, Dark Elf armies to finish off (or maybe even start!).....Thank goodness my Wood Elf army was nearly finished!lol

definitely 1.

Firstly I like 1 better.

Secondly, and most importantly, if you have to do 90 of these, 1 will take far less time.

Just to add to the confusion, how about doing 1, but then do some highlights painted on like 2 but just with the lightest colour (scorpian green?). That may remove any blotchyness, but seriously cut down on the paint time.

Interestingly I often use a very heavt ink wash over white as the starting point for my painting, then add a bunch of layers on top.

I don\'t think 1 looks bad, just a bit bright.
Have you tried mixing a tiny amount of other color into the green ink?
I\'d suggest you try a tiny bit of brown or red ink into the green and see how that works out.
For 90 it would certainly be much simpler.
