Two GenCon Speed Painted Minis

The one on the left was from a Reaper speed painting contest, the one on the right was from a Privateer Press seed painting contest. The former is so so, even in my own not so humble oppinion but the latter isn\'t all that bad for a mere 45 minutes of painting work. The PP mini was also primed in black. This was a quick and dirty photo I took from my hotel room.

That was my impression as well. There are some things that I could hve done better if I had a little more time (the bad parts on the trim are better seen in the rear sot) and I think a lot of washes whould make the dress shine but other than that I am very impressed at least with the Privateer Press mini.

I posted another version just with the PP mini, using both sides with some tehniques I picked up at the photo class. I even started a little freehand but alas I was only drawing a blank. Started with a Tau ... figured they wouldn\'t understand so changed it to an anchor but it also could be a smiley face and well it\'s something.

So what\'s the point?

Difference; what\'s with the point difference. I\'ve bumped this thread to get some opinions because now that both have over 60 votes I can start to take the random luck effect out of the picture. The current count is as follows:

Top picture: Rating 5.0 (62 votes)
Bottom picture: Rating 4.3 (64 votes)

I\'m going to ignore the possible effect of the reaper mini in the picutre, as it only makes the argument more convincing. Highlighting that blue on that purple was wrong and the detail is bad even in that photo. So with that aside, why does the top photo score .7 more than the bottom one. I have a few thoughts and they are not pretty.

The upper shot shows less detail because it is smaller. If you\'re not a top rated mini painter it\'s probably best not to show your mini too large that way the voters won\'t see the flaws. Sure a few might complain the mini is too small, too bad.

The upper shot has a background that shows cleavage. Apparently this really ins\'t cool mini or not, but let\'s see cleavage or not. I suppose I\'m going to have to find some booth babe to showase my mini and have everyone vote on the booth babe and not on the mini. Fine, I can live with that.

I\'m still going with showing mediocre minis really tiny approach for now. It might explain my runequest ducks because there is no cleavage on the mini and it\'s currently Rating 5.7 (25 votes). (Of course one needs to wait until it goes over 50 votes to really confirm this theory.)

Of course it is. You do read the general discussion forum don\'t you? :D

Edit: I love the guy standing on her left, is he looking at the big pile of gold? I don\'t think so lol

BTW the minis are a nice distraction from the decolletage well done especially for a speed paint

He is definitely looking with surprise at the contents of a rather large chest; only it\'s probably not the one filled with gold. :D

No offence Tzor, but do you really care abou thte whole voting thing?

You could write an algorithmic statement like (for example):
Distance from camera + model size x colours and background used / number of views = X (X referring to points)

But its still going to go all tits up, CMoN scoring is so fickle. The entire experiment would be a huge waste of time IMO

Plus I always prefer when a model is shown at a massive size, at least 2x\'s the normal size, that way it can be seen and voted on fairly.

If I ever see a group of minis which I can barely see they get a lower vote on principle (so I\'v already chucked your statement out the window)

O and BTW, nice speed paints :)

Dude, they\'re speed-painted, in that range of the voting scale, there\'s a lot of play related to different people\'s concepts of \"crap\", \"good enough\", and \"tabletop\". And frankly, for anything that\'s not display quality, the rule is smaller pic => better score. That second pic showcases every blob and streak a little too nicely.

The colours on the one to the right are portrayed much better in the first pic. They look like a unified hole with colours that complement each other and look cool... as in cool mini or not! :)
