God help me...I know I am over the hill, and being an ex-teacher doesn\'t help, but I start to p*ss blood everytime I try to decipher this stuff.

It\'s becoming endemic....

Don\'t get me wrong, I am all in favour of getting meaning across in the simplest possible way....but....but...

..words fail me....

I have no problem with this on a telephone however, where the restricted keyboard makes shortcuts desirable and inevitable...but the way it has insidiously crept into other modes of communication gets my goat....so...

Whats wrong with it? cu l8er or see you later? They both say the same thing. Its not some sort of evil bastardisation of the english word, its just abbrev. because its easy.

While I dislike bashing for the sake of it, this is one of my pet peeves. So much so that I will tend to ignore posts with such spelling. I also keep a dictionary and thesaurus under my mouse for those occasions where I find the need to look up words. It doesn\'t take any more time to properly spell the word out, unless you don\'t know how to spell the word in the first place.

I use text speak myself when I am texting on the \'phone and obviously expect to get it back. That is fine...when you are trying to type on a \'phone keypad!
I just start grinding my teeth when I see it elsewhere:flip:

It only really dawned on me, as an issue, when I realised it was about to affect a vote I was going to give a mini. What affects mini voting habits has been a lively topic recently, so I thought I would stir the pot further

I completely agree. I despise all these little smileys too. How lazy do we have to get when we can\'t even be bothered to execise our fingers? It\'s not cute people. It\'s like the joke you\'ve heard a hundred times and makes you want vomit your intestines up. I\'ve never used them and never will. Speak full sentences. It\'s good practice for evolution.

I try to ignore it, just like I try to ignore slouching teenage boys wearing baggy ass-pants, fat teenage girls wearing hip-huggers, girls spitting, upside-down sun visors, and all other bizarre youth trends that are either a) retarded, or b) evidence that I\'m no longer even remotely \"hip\".

the only time i use text speak is in texting or Instant messages. i also have this habit of hardly ever capitalizing my \"i\"\'s and im not a very good speller, but thats besides the point :flip:

I agree with Finn. That form of speach has its place, but it drives me nuts when used somewhere that typing entire words is not an issue.

I recently ran into this on FFXI. I was working a deal for some mage boots and the guy was typing back in whatever you call that speach. Normally I don\'t bat an eye, since I know many people out there are on PS2\'s and don\'t have a keyboard (trust me without a keyboard you have to type like that) and made that assumption, but then when he asked me if I had ICQ open in another window (U runin Q?) it dawned on me that this person had all the tools necessary to type like a normal person and communicate properly. It drove me nuts, and actually I ended up cancelling the deal because of it.

I can\'t stand people who use that kind of abreviation crap.

Even worse are those who take leet seriously as a hacker language. Jokingly, my friends and I have taken to speaking the leet in everyday talk! Example: I was found watching teh pr0n! Pwned hax0r$!

When you work in IT and are surrounded by Acronyms every minute of every day the use of the English language becomes a relief.
Text messaging is fine on a mobile phone, but that is where it should stay.

Anaughtybear (I think) stated that they don\'t like the use of Smiley\'s. I must disagree. The English language when written or typed is open to a great deal of mis-interpretation in regard to intent or humour. Therefore I use smileys (As do a number of other people) to indicate the Humour or Sarcasm to a comment on the forums. (As an example you just have to look at the banter between \"t-haye2\" and myself)
In similar vein I have also started to use the Smiley code in Comments on peoples posting, specifically to prevent offense on any constructive critisicm I make.

(I\'m also in two minds about a spell checker on the forums. On one hand it would be helpful, but on the other it does make me think about my spelling. )

I already have my problems reading plain English because it\'s not my first language so when I run across abbreviations, slang terms or acronyms I have to spend more time to translate them.

On the other side I think my English sometime is really hard to understand
