Honestly, I don\'t understand the txt spk very well at all.
If used like Finn says, because of a lack of character space on a phone or pager I am sure it does help.
But used anywhere else, it seems it would take longer to write, longer to read, and longer yet to comprehend, yet it is supposed to be some form of time saving shorthand?

when you instant message, it does take less time because most people know what it means ... i.e. almost everyone knows that \"brb\" means be right back...and IMHO is in my humble opinion...it takes alot less time to write and most people know what it is.
733t speak - gah. I know someone who started actually throwing in a few words here and there. I don\'t mean w00t, which is about as reasonably as \'yay\', but idiocies like \'suxxor\' and \'roxxor\' and a few others along those lines. Had it been an abbreviation it might even be acceptable (just barely), but it adds another unneccessary syllable! Completely pointless. A bit less annoying than \'rom-com\', \'po-mo\', and \'traj\' and \'cazjh\' (for \'tragic\' and \'casual\').
I actually try to avoid txt-speak even when I\'m texting... Unless I\'ve completely run out of room, I go out of my way to use full words and spell them correctly. I just think it looks completely stupid otherwise, and in email form it\'s even worse! o u r rite omg lol wtf rotfl bbq
That and the really, really obvious spelling mistakes and typos. A few occasionally are understandable but what really makes me crazy is when someone is typing a serious email, or even putting in the text for an Ebay auction, and it\'s utterly riddled with spelling errors/typos/text-speak. I just cannot possibly take that person or their argument seriously when they didn\'t take the time to proofread or even attempt to sound serious.
