Hi everone

a good friend has 2 boxes with tyranid warios and the box with the termagants /hornmagants.

we agreed (since i´m the painter ) that i paint them we sell them on ebay to a player since we don´t wanna start playing 40k. i already got some nice conversions in mind i wanna do, but before i start i got a few questions :

- which base size is the right one for tyranid warriors , which one is the biggest base size i am allowed gamwise ?

which weapons from the boxes should i choose for the termagants, which ones for the warriors? i have no clue which mix of weapons make sense. ( does a pure close combat fighter make sense in Wh 40k ? )

i have six tyranid warriors can they be played as one unit or should i paint them as two units ?

i know that these must seem like silly questions to you and normally i would google it, but i´m completly lacking the time, so i hope you can answer them

thanks in advance

I had a nid army a couple of years back and I always played with the warriors shooting and hormagaunts.

I remember the guns for termagaunts being pretty rubbish, and the warriors never got close enough to the enemy to use CC.

Not very specific I know, but I can\'t really remember much.

Peace and love...

Personally I\'d arm the warriors with deathspitters/scything talons and the gaunts with devourers.

Deathspitters are a blast weapon which means you no longer need to roll to hit. Warriors are not that good at shooting with their low BS and it costs quite a few points extra to make them mediocre. Take away that need to roll to hit and you have a very nice shooty unit. Deathspitters have a high strength and the template has to land somewhere so they can make a mockery of infantry units. The scything talons are a good cheap choice for secondary weapons as they grant an extra attack making them none too shabby in HtH. I would try and give them an extended carapace (adding extra armour plates where you can) as their normal save is a bit pants.

As for the gaunts you don\'t get a choice with the hormagaunts, they come with scything talons so just use what comes on their sprue. With the Termagants you have 3 choices. Take the spinefists and throw them away as they aren\'t worth the plastic they\'re cast from lol That leaves you with devourers and flesh borers. Devourers will give you more shots but have very low strength, this is somewhat aleviated by the fact that you can re-roll to wound making them reasonable choices against Guardsmen and Eldar. Fleshborers have a higher strength (you can get them up to S5!) making them great against Marines and Orks. I couldn\'t really recommend one over the other but the only thing that would tip it for me if I was painting them to sell is the fact that the last edition of 40k came with a load of Termagants armed with fleshborers meaning that there are quite a few about. Taking this into account I\'d probably go for Devourers.

Just make sure you arm the whole lot with the same weapons. Nid broods should be big to soak up casualties so I\'d group them all into units of 16 for the gaunts and 6 for the Warriors. You could add one of the heavier weapons to the Warrior brood in which case I\'d go for the barbed strangler for the same reasons given above, it doesn\'t need to roll to hit.

I hope that helped, these suggestions are just what I would want if I was buying them but doubtless other people will be looking for something different.

thanks guys that already helped alot:beer:

@undave: that all sounds reasonable to me ... actually the moment i read the word blast weapon in your post , i rembered what somebody told me about the new edition and blast weapons being extremly strong and that space orc army he saw with 30+ blast weapons ... no idea how i could forget this

i will go with scything talons and deathspitters and one with a barbed strangler as support

just one more question to bother you: i know which part of the sprue are supposed to be the scything talons ( pretty obvious ), but which ones are the Deathspitters and which one is the barbed strangler and the devourers ?

i already looked at the GW site but i found only one picture with a tyranid sprue that didn´t help me

oh and sorry for the cr**py english in my first post , i wrote that at my college library just before the class started - no time equals no spelling...

Don\'t forget you ought to be able to get one or two ripper swarms out of those sprues as well.

edit: for some reason Bitzbox have the image names for the first two the wrong way round...

many , many thanks undave

no chance i whould have figured that out one my on and honestly, never heard of bitbox before,... but then , these and the orc boss i´m painting right now are my first WH40K minis

oh , and i already found the ripper swarms - nasty looking little bastards , but they look like alot of fun to paint

i´m really looking forward to this ... i got a plan that involves some minor repositioning , a recipe for sylaber , blood and ooze i found on a german forum and some space marine parts i had lying around for far to long.

:D

´til next time
