Tyranids - Starting a new army

Starting up a new army after selling off my old lots a while ago and have been looking at Tyranids.

Any Ideas would be appreciated on a good 1000point army that can stand up a lot, including necrons.

Tyranids...

The \'Nids aren\'t an easy army to play well... They are very assualt based and thier lack of decent \'shooty\' troops makes them an easy target if you sould not make use of cover and crafty tactics! As a basic rule you\'ll want scary hard units like Hive Tyrants and Carnifex\'s shielded by swarms of Gaunts... Add to this something nasty and fast like The Red Terror and maybe a lictor and you\'ll be on your way... Think the most effective strategy would be absolutley tonnes of cheap troops swarming the enemy and taking the brunt of their firepower, then sending in the Nasty Boys to eviscerate them!

Look around on the web for more in-depth information (probably more accurate too)...

I collected Tyranids a few years back, and the main tactic of them is to get them in hand to hand combat as soon as you possibly can. Gargoyles are fast and can shoot, Warriors have some nice weapons, but genestealers are just crazy once they are up close and personal to the enemy. Good luck and I hope this helps.

using smaller creatures is good use the splicing rules in the back of the codex basic gaunt and just take spine fists that should be 5 pts per gaunt. big things are key to winning but witj targetting rules they make easy targets, i would recommend taking 2 units of tyrant huard 1 unit for hive tyrant and another for a carnifex if you take max squad size this effectively gives each big creature an additional 6 wounds at toughness 6 hope this helps you. let us know how you get on

Ive been reading up on it and I think the best option for myself is to:

Max out on both types of gaunt and use these to rush the enemy quickly and tie up squads at a time.

Then behind the gaunts come the genestealers which are slower, but do crazy damage. Because the squads are tied up these shouldn\'t be targetted and will probably be underestimated.

To further this effect Ill bring in a Tyrant and a Carnifax (both with guards). These can deal out some damage, but will also distract the enemy from my genestealers. Average player with a big tank is probably going to shoot the tyrant rather than the genestealers.

Finally Ill deploy a Lictor to keep them guessing and ambush any heavy weapons squads.

Once the genestealers hit (prob 2 squads of them) its goodnight ;). What do you think?

I\'ve got a tyranid army and i have about 40 genestealers and a couple of squads of raveners to tie up the enemy long enough for my little stealer buddies to get in. I also have 2 lictors, a hive tyrand and, of course, a Carni:D

This army works pretty well for me, i\'ve played against my share of enemies and the biggest problem i\'ve found is how to tie up the enemies so they don\'t pick off either my tyrand or blast my genestealers. But remember genestealers are fricking beasts in combat:p

sounds good don\'t forget about genestealers infiltrate ability

if this still doesn\'t work try a seeding swarm:D really cheesy i know but deep striking feroucious genestealers into combat is ace and yes they can do that
