U18 gd catagory

Hey,I know that there are rather a few of us people who have just missed out on youngbloods this year at GD UK. So if you live in the UK and are over 15 but feel that you are not quite up too the \"adult\" catagories, or that its a little unfair that in Australia they have many under 18 and 15 catagories. If you do, or you are over 18 and think this would be a good idea anyway, please post below with your response.

Also, bear in mind this is not a thread for having a go at GW, but will eventually go towards a letter which suggests that this would be a good idea and having some supportive names would be pretty cool.

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!:bouncy::bouncy: i totaly agree. ive still got a few gos left at youngbloods, but i dont fancy the minute i leave having to go up against people like vincenti. i also think that it might be worth having a mounted and mybe monster category. the only downside is that gwmay simply claim it will cost more money then they can afford like they did with national painting comp.

I can\'t imagine why having a category for U18 would be a bad thing. What\'s the current cut off for young bloods? 14?

Any category that allows people to build enthusiasm for their entries haveing a shot is IMO a good thing. I support your petition young sir!

Though I do flinch at the statement about the setup in Australia being \"Unfair\". If you think it\'s a good thing to have extra categories put in place then I would stress that you wish to emulate their procedure and not use a term with negative impact like \"unfair\" when you do send a message off to GW. Just a thought.

All in all seems a good idea. What would be the things keeping GW from adopting this? Would it be too hard for the judges to assess competition if the categories ballooned slightly on them? I have never been to a games day so I don\'t know if they have a tough time of selecting winners in the time provided or not.

Whats at issue is they only have so much time to judge the entries they already have..adding another category or more will only make it even harder for them to get it done.

As much as you may feel its unfair I doubt you will sway their decision.

i really hope this succeeds and myabe put something in about \" how with another category sales will increase as youngpeople will be more models to practice on\" seeing as this gets em more money it should help

I am also under the impression that lots of people over the ago of 14 enter youngbloods (most definatly not me!), which spoilts it (although ari still kicks their arse..).

I didnt really mean unfair, more like strange, as i understand Australia and New Zeland have a much smaller population than that of Britain.

Actually Max, GW gets the most ammount of customers in their STORES on gamesday than any other day, due to all the kids who cant go to games day going to GW instead.

Finally, although it would be more work for GW in the long run, it would allow the 15-18 croud to feel more welcome at painting events as it means that they do not feel like winning is an impossible goal, which could put them off and then GW therfore lose money.

But the aussies manage it, so we should have no problem :p

I agree with the extra categories. It would clear some of the confusion up with where a certain mini should go, particular one\'s mounted on mounts.

I have a feeling that this will take a strain off the U15\'s youngbloods catagory with the amount of over 14s that enter, also this will take the 15-18s entries out of other catagories, so there will be less entries into other catagories, therefore meaning that the same amount of judging is needed to be done.

Second point, its worth a try, even if they consider it I will be happier than knowing i couldnt be bothered to try.

i agree it may seem unfair, although whatever you do there will be some people at a disadvantage/advantage. would a better compromise would maybe to have youngbloods age restriction moved to 16 or maybe even 18. this would mean more competition in YB but gives them more of a chance before going into the full catagories

Well good luck! I think it is a very good idea. Maybe PM the dude from the oz GD and ask his opininons on the affect the extra categories have had. Maybe he can offer things others haven\'t thought of before you ask GW to consider this.

No harm in asking.

youngbloods is their to encourage the younger painters.
as information is widely available nowadays on painting techniques etc age is less of a concern (the speed that people can improve nowadays thanks to the internet is frighteneing!)

don\'t think that another category for age will make things more \"even\" as it\'s down to practice.
younger people generaly have more time on their hands and their eyesight isn\'t failing.

if anything their should be a fifty and over category lol (and i don\'t fit into that you cheeky gits!)

I agree, but having the cut off at 15 seems a little silly as most serious painters start about about 14, get one youngbloods and are booted out into the real world. The standard is just so high in the non yb catagories that it puts off lots of would be entrants from even trying because they know there is no chance,

Why are there still thousands of entries every year then? I mean not just from ex-YB people, but from adults (many of whom could be pwned by us YB people :p)? While I don\'t entirely disagree with the idea, it just makes things more complicated by adding more categories. YB is just baby steps really, to inspire you, allow you to increase your confidence and experience the competition. If you\'re good enough to do well in YB you should in theory have the potential to succeed in the adult categories, within a few years at the least. How many of the über-skilled serial winners were any good at our age? It\'s just kind of a different learning curve.

I still think the idea is sound. It\'d be great to get some aussie feedback.

The curve from YB to full blown competition is likely too steep for the YB to have a good chance at placing. An intermediate category may encourage young painters to continue to \"go for it\" with a chance of catching some reward and recognition before placing them in the same pon as the big fish.

I think the U18 category would help bridge the gap slightly and really push some of the people who get into the hobby at the 15-16 age a chance to put together an entry and face off against a group of their peers.

With GW continuing to put a lot of focus on getting the younger teenage crowd I would support a decision to provide this category for those people.

But, I\'m 32, don\'t paint competitively, and live in Canada. I don\'t know how relevant that makes my opinion on the matter.

I don\'t think things will change either, however the point about adding another category being more harder for the judges to get their job done has some flaws. If GW can afford to fly store managers and members of the \'eavy metal team to GD, it shouldn\'t be difficult to put an extra judging team in place.

On the subject of the necessity of the U18, 17 and 18 are too old for a seperate category. I can say this because I know (both personally and through the web) many ex-youngblood painters and quite a few other painters my age. Creating a youngblood category for painters at my age (17) seems a bit weird as we\'re on our way to becoming fairly independent of child-like benefits and stereotypes... why should this sort of extended-incubation continue so long? It shouldn\'t, we should be up against the adults, like the way it is now (in most countries).

OK, my thoughts on the Oz system.

I think its great having more YB and U18 categories, it allows the younger up and coming painters to compete, without having to go up against the older \'masters\' if they want to.

That last bit is very important, there is nothing stopping a YB competing in the main categories if they wish. This year we had a U18 get a silver in the main large category (giving Automaton a run for his money) and his sister, who is a YB, got gold in the U18. I know they are both very encouraged by the wins and thats a great thing.

Having a few more YB/U18 catogories can be very benificial to the painting community, by encouraging the younger painters to improve. There is nothing quite like that first trophy win.

And finally, the YB trophy is cooler than the GD trophy so we should have more of them lol

You are taking your point from Golden Deamon held in Canada. The UK\'s nominal number of entries for GD runs in the thousands. Are that that many entries in Canada or at the three USA comps?

And while I kinda sympathise with the \"out of the Kiddies pool straight into the deep end\" concern I doubt that GW will take any notice of such a concept.
Hey it\'s taken them 15 years to get their judging where its at now. :innocent::rolleyes::innocent:

I didn\'t know we were discussing \"purely\" the UK GD. Even if that is so, what is wrong with bringing in more judges..? One or two more categories wouldn\'t add thousands more models.

I`m reading a lot of \"GW won\'t change their minds\" which I don\'t think changes the point.

Individually do we each think this would be a good idea? If it was YOUR decision to make, would you expand the competition to include the mentioned categories?

I whole heartedly think it\'s an excellent idea. I like Trevor\'s comments about the enthusiasm it generates in Australia, and I would like to see the category expanded to other GD\'s as well. I especially feel with all the other hobbies, video games and other less savoury activities that present themselves at that age I think it be a good idea for GW to introduce a category that might help them maintain the energy and efforts from the Youngblood crowd, or those that started JUST a little to late to compete in those events

Logistically it would be more difficult. I see that. I still think it\'d be worth it.
