UK Mini painting organisation

Dear all....

Ok, this has been some while in the making, and a few of you already know about this.... but it\'s finally time to announce this to the world!

I\'ll start with a short pre-amble!...

I got back into painting two and a half years ago after an 18 year odd gap. Realising very quickly how far things had moved on in those intervening years, I quickly treid to learn all I could from anyone who would teach me.

Obviously, as we all know, the wealth of skill and information available online is massive, if you know where to look... but as helpful as CMON and other forums were... I began feeling this was a very lonely hobby (cue violin music :)

I began heading down to my local GW store to try and meet other folks with an interest in serious painting and modelling... and that\'s when I met the rest of our little team. Over the last year and a bit myself and five other local painters have started getting together on a regular basis to chat over our work in progress, discuss techniques and generally geek-out about the hobby. These meetings have not only proven to be one of the most fun parts of the hobby for me, but have massively boosted my painting and given me access to the opinions of other skilled painters who aren\'t afraid to tell me I need to fix something if one of my models is looking a bit shabby.

When our group attended GD Spain earlier this year we were luck enough to make it along to the \'painters banquet\' the night before... some of the world\'s best painters were there and had minis with them which they were happy to show people up close and discuss with everyone... I learnt more in that hour than I had the previous year.

It dawned on me, and I know it\'s dawned on others, that meeting with other painters face to face, and being able to sit down, with each other\'s work there in front of you, not inside a badly lit glass case, is the best way by far of improving one\'s painting.

With this in mind, there was an impromptu meeting between our group and a few other UK painters who were at the event, and some input from Brian Aderson, GW\'s Warhammer World events manager, on the subject of trying to organise some kind of painting/modelling related events in the UK to help everyone from the newbie to the GD winner to intermingle and hopefully for everyone to feel a little more like part of a community and to learn some new things.

Originally there was some talk of trying to form a \'UK painting team\' styled after those in other countries, but we didn\'t feel that was what the UK needed... We felt those teams tended to increase the \'celebrity level\' of a small handfull of already very highly skilled painters but didn\'t actually do much (other than provide inspiration) for the up and coming painters (like us :).

So... we formed this idea of getting together a national organisation that has the simple remit of organising events for UK based mini painters... nothing more.

Ideally, we want to encourage everyone to form small local groups (I klnow there are already quite a few) like ours to meet up regularly, and then give them these quarterly national events at which to show off their work and meet other painters from across the UK in a friendly and social atmosphere to discuss the hobby.

Anyway, after a couple of trips up to Nottingham by a few of us to negotiate use of the venue etc, and with the help of Brian at GW, we are now in a position where we have the first event organised for July 27th this year.

This will hopefully be the first of many quarterly events.

So... below is a press release about the organisation and the first event... we\'ve got a \'work in progress\' website up at:

http://www.platoonbritannica.org.uk

And we\'ll post more info about the event on the \'CMON Conventions\' forum as we get closer.

A couple of quick things only because I know folks will ask:

1: No one is making any money from this, we have genuinely just decided to do this because we think it\'d be great for the hobby.

2: Yes, GW are happy for painters to bring up and display non-GW miniatures at the event... the only stipulation is that it\'s a mini that vaguely fits in with one of the GW rule sets (which is pretty much everything), they\'ve been really good about helping us out with getting this off the ground.

3: So what are they getting from it? I know, cynical hats on all round... the bottom line is, they are getting their venue filled with people passionate about the hobby who may well buy stuff whilst there, they are also getting access to lots of very good painters and modellers who may be able to provide content for them to display or publish in the future. That\'s it.

So... please feel free to pass this press-release and details of the event to anyone and everyone you know. We\'re going to try and get this posted on any and all forums where UK painters may lurk.

Myself and a couple of the other guys who helped organise this will be at Salute at the weekend with \'Platoon Britannica\' t-shirts on. We are not there officially and will not be going around forcing flyers into everyones hands :) but if you see us, and want some more info or want to chat about the idea... please come say hi.

Other than that.... really hope to see everyone who can make it up in Lenton in July!!!!

All the best

Ben

Well Done.
Nice to see that GW are supporting THIS aspect of the Hobby.

As Ben and I have already discussed I\'ll be attending this event and am willing to lend a hand displaying figures etc..

Hope to see lots of people there.

(Oh and isn\'t it nice to see GW acknowledging other manufacturers..This means that Historical miniatures for Warhammer Historical games will fit in as well. ;) )

Hi Mike, and thanks again for your help with this :)

Yeah, the first thing we asked after GW agreed to let us have the venue was \"So, you\'re not gonna throw us out if we display non-GW models are you?\" :)

They were really good about it, Warhammer World kind of operates as a commercial entity in it\'s own right, organising events and exhibitions which are often linked to, or in support of groups and organisations outside of the great corporate behemoth that is GW itself. As such, they have said that they allow people to game with non-GW minis at the venue (so long as the minis vaguely represent something that could be used in the game in question) so they are basically happy to apply the same rule to a painting and modelling event.

We were relieved about that one :)

Anyway, so far we\'ve got a pretty good response from everyone we\'ve discussed this with, so I REALLY hope all the UK painters will come along! I know it\'s a long way to go for a painting event... but I assure you it will be worth it!!!

Cheers

Sounds like a great idea.
Its also the day before my birthday, so I should be able to make it.
Hell I may even dust and repair some old stuff for people to see.
I will hopefully catch up with you at Salute for the cmon meet up and chat.

That\'d be cool.... we\'ve been desperately trying to get this info out and the website up before Salute as we know there are gonna be a lot of the UK mini painting community there anyway, and it\'s one of the few chances that already exist to speak to people face to face :)

This could well end up turning into the biggest \'show and tell\' of beautiful minis the UK\'s ever seen :) Fingers crossed!

Anyway, cheers for now, and hopefully see you on Saturday!

(At 12:00 or 1:00 depending on whether anyone decides when we\'re actually all meeting up :)

Sounds like a fantastic idea. I\'ll see if I can round up OrkyDave and a few other Cov lads and make a trip of it.

GREAT...:)... I have been waiting for that, it is really strange and sad that the Uk, the motherland of the biggest Miniature Company in the world had NO team...

Too bad I lately gave an interwiev ranting about the British not being able to create a proper team...^_^... I have to revise that now maybe...:)...

it\'s something that the historical painting comunity has had for a long time.

would be nice to get Jeremie and some others over as well at some stage.
i was trying to organise it myself but just don\'t have the time unfortunately.

Why are these things always in Notts or Brum? :cussing:
I know they\'re more central, but it\'d be nice to have some sort of smaller events around the country.

I\'m thinking Bournemouth BIC ;) :p

(Of course there may well BE, but I\'ve not heard of any)

Hey, come on Matt, we\'re British, it\'s our speciality to create a competitive activity and then get beaten at it by everyone else :)

Perhaps that\'s a little harsh when it comes to mini painting :)

It hasn\'t gone unnoticed by GW and most UK painters that we have won les than 50% of our own demons the last few UK GD\'s... as mentioned, the idea of a \'painting team\' similar to those of Spain and other countries was considered, but we felt that it was better to focus on enabling and encouraging the whole UK painting community to have access to the element of those teams which make them so successful (close interaction with other high-level painters so that everyone grows and learns new techniques at a faster rate) rather than trying to create a small national painting team who merely act as an inspiration to the community at large.

By creating this as more of an open community we still get to have that personal interaction which will hopefully create friendships and interaction between all of the UK\'s competitive painters and, when someone who you now know, wearing a \'Platoon Britannica\' t-shirt goes up on stage to collect their demon, everyone in that community will still have the feeling of mutual pride of \'one of us\' having won something, without any self apointed group having arbitrarily made that person a member of a \'team\' and meaning that EVERYONE feels part of that person\'s success.

I hope that makes some kind of sense :)

Basically, having seen it happen in other hobbies, and heard of it happening in this hobby before... if we were to go and appoint ourselves the \'official national painting team\' all it\'d do is annoy everyone who wasn\'t invited to be a member and probably wouldn\'t help the UK, as a nation, get any better at painting minis.

We just want to get everyone together, geek out and see where it leads.

Sorry Dan :)

As you say, WHW was seen as being ideal because it\'s A: central to the country, B: has other mini-related activities to do there and C: (most importantly) it\'s free :)

We really want to try and get people to form their own regional groups and meet up more frequently than the quarterly events that PB will be organising... maybe as time goes on the organisation may have the resources to organise regional events as well... but at the mo, it\'s as much as we can do to get one national event together :)

Cheers!

Ooh, sounds great, and you never know, if my health permits, I may be there. It\'s only about 25 miles or so away.

@Squig Are you in the UK now then?

More like if we can wake you up..................remember Fiasco?

Either we\'ll be travelling in my car, or If there is enouogh interest via the local store there might be a minibus.
I discussed this with our local store manager when Ben contacted me a couple of weeks ago and he is very intrerested in improving this aspect of the Hobby.
He\'s offered to allow gatherings within the Bolton Store as a venue for Painters to get together and have more local meetings.
