I hear its going ahead...

If I were in charge (hopefully someday..) I would have fired each one of those workers who want to go on strike. This is the tail end of a recession so we would fill up the empty jobs within days. It would mean everyone gets their post on time and sends a message to the fools that go on strike;

If you don\'t like how much you get paid for being a postman, then you should have listened more at school.

lol

use parcel force, they will still be delivering (they are part of royal mail!)

i wouldn\'t worry as it\'s only two days and they have a backlog already due to various unoficial strikes already.
the unions basicly fund the party in pwer and think they have them by the balls when in actual fact they are going to screw themselves big time as they aren\'t in a position to pull this shit (before they decided to strike i was on the posties side as having worked for them before i know how goverments have screwed royal mail over the years)

Some of the stories about the behaviour of Royal Mail workers I\'ve been hearing, if true, would warrant disciplinary action, if not dismissal. (Failure to deliver, deliberately returned items without attempts to deliver, stockpiling post to do one delivery per week.)

However as a customer of the Royal Mail I have to say in general terms The Service is failing, while individual service that I receive is good.

Whilst I have some sympathy for individual postal workers especially the posties who do seem in general to have it pretty hard, going on strike is really not going to help them. They complain because the service needs to modernise which will inevitably lead to people getting laid off as stuff like sorting is automated. Thing is it needs to be modernised to make the service profitable. By going on strike they are causing businesses to find alternatives to RM which will make it even harder for them to make a profit as their customer share dwindles.

What people need to remember is that goverments have used a lot of royal mails profits to fund other goverment projects instead of reinvesting it into the royal mail infrasture (modernising it).
Add to this gordon browns pension fund raid on the royal mail workers pensions (without putting the money back) and you can see how the business has been run down on purpose.
Add to this the unions flexing their muscles and not telling the workers the whole truth and you can now see how we got to this point.

Looks like the UK is back to the seventies :(

I was in the other day and instead of ringing the door, they just posted a \"you were out\" note. I think he left the package at the sorting office.. takes the piss..

Are there any decent alternatives because I am fed up..

I was thinking just that myself, all we need is some blackouts, the dustbinmen to strike and for the economic stimulus packages to kick inflation through the roof, and we\'ll be there.

Oh and space hoppers, we need more of those...

This is a topic that we\'ve had quite a few conversations about where I work. Personally I think that the union who are supporting strike action needs to get real, we\'re currently in what can only be described as \'financially cautious\' times, I didn\'t receive a pay rise last year and it\'s likely that I won\'t next year either - for my responsibilities, experience, knowledge and qualifications I\'m well under the local average in pay, but I\'m realistic enough to know that now is not the time to have a paddy and refuse to work - especially as the unemployment pool is as large as it is.

I\'m not saying that the postal workers should be \'grateful\' for having a job, after all employers generally aren\'t grateful for having employees - I do believe that they should be aware that they could be a lot worse off and going down the route of shafting the people who actually pay their wages isn\'t going to win them many friends.

I also must say that as Mike has said, the induvidual service that I receive is normally pretty good, an odd issue here and there but nothing major.

They aren\'t asking for a raise, are they?

From what I\'ve read, they are opposed to forced unpayed overtime and job reductions. Maybe there is more?

that used to happen at my old place all the time. they would also just not bother with the card, i nearly missed out on concert tickets once because of that

having said that the postie here seems pretty good, as is the one at home

In my mind, a national postal service should fall under the same catagory as the police, fire service, army etc in being unable to take strike action.

We have small businesses fighting their way out of recession tooth and nail, and now Royal Mail wants to play silly buggers with their Christmas deliveries, it\'s just madness!

phew, and breathe!
