UKGD Winners Booklet

I thought it was strange that there had been no 2004GD booklet with white dwarf. Here\'s the reason: GD Booklet. That\'s right folks, they\'ve decided to sell it separately, and at £6 for a 44 page booklet.

More than anything else, I\'m annoyed for the winners. Instead of getting their work seen by every WD reader, they only get it shown to the people that will buy this overpriced booklet. It sure makes me less willing to enter this year

It\'s about time they went back to doing it properly - £15 for a book with ALL the best entries in - an incentive for painting mortals to enter! They could even do an \'International\' GD book with the winners from every competition in. £6 for what should still be a freebie is a load of bollocks.

I think you will find that the winners may make it into White Dwarf but putting them into a separate book keeps them all together as well as making GW a tidy profit for a glossy pamphlet. It is only like the old Citadel Miniatures yearly books that used to come out just less pages for what would today be a lot more money.

Are they taking the winners out of WD? What I mean is, are you sure it wont be in the next issue perhaps? They still have the pics here in Canada. Although I dont remember ever seeing any from overseas. We dont have inserts/pamphlets either, the coverage is all on the pages of the magazine. The reason I ask is because they do alot of those \"summary\" books, they stick together a bunch of articles on a subject and make a book. The painting, modelling and LOTR books come to mind.

Sounds like a nice book to have but I\'d much rather be in WD if I ever won a Demon. Then again with all the \"dumming down\" GW seems to be doing, this doesnt suprise me. A golden demon figure must be intimidating to a new child first picking up the game with his allowance. Disregard the grown ups who\'ve put thousands into the company every year for who knows how long. What\'s an extra sixer from them anyway.

Actually I dont really have any ill will towards GW, but this isnt cool at all.

If its 44 pages.. I guess there will be good pictures. I mean.. wtf. the last GD i saw was perhaps 20 pages in the WD. How many pages was that tiny booklet for last year? Another question.. is it in ordinary WD format or small like the last booklet?

ooh im gonna be in that , my mates who work in gw have already read it and they say its pretty good, i think the manager said this is the idea for future games days aswell, the idea is rather than trying to cram the information into a white dwarf the can have lots of space in a completely new magazine, i kinda get them, but i know its just a way they\'re going to get more money

On another note, we know that the winners who managed to go to the meet-up at head office have had interviews and stuff done, but what about thoe unable to make it (natalya for example) do they just have a blank space, or did they manage to get in contact with them somehow, or maybe gw just came up witha load of random BS?

Like I say I will probably buy it, as it is easily the best thing about WD, but WD can kiss my arse from here on in.

Having said that though, it is pretty flimsy, and will most likely rise in value over the next 5 yrs on eBay if it\'s kept in good condition.

I think having them in a separate book is a good idea, which is what they\'ve done for the last couple of years only given it away for free. Its nice to have them all in a separate book and like brokenblade has said it means its possible to have more pages.

The only thing I dont agree with is the price, it seems silly to price a 44 page book at £6.

This is what i wrote about the booklet in another forum...

Pro\'s about the book is that the page count has doubled, and some of the entries now have text next to them to explain how they came about and why they entered with that perticular piece. It also has a section about the judges of the competition and how you can get noticed in the GD comp. Finish it off with a few pages at the back of other older GD winning entries (mainly from America) and you have quite a slick production.

The con\'s about it are obviously the price, and how GW are charging for a publication that was previously free. Hopefully it won\'t sell very well and it\'ll be free next year, but im not holding my breath.....

I personally bought it and i think it\'s a very nice publication and the ability to refrence it in the future is good, but then again i love the GD out of all the GW events and i personally loved the booklet.

44 pages at £6 isn\'t too silly if you consider that the CMON annual is £0.14/0.15 per page (£14.70 and 104 pages). The GD one is £0.13/0.14 per page. I just did the maths of it all! I imagine the postage is higher for the CMON one as well. I am basing this assumption on the price on the CMON shop being US dollars, otherwise I\'m totally wrong lol.

What the f*** is wrong with paying £6 for a 44 page full colour book?! Osprey books cost a bit more for a similar page count... and I bet most of you here would rather look at painted fantasy miniatures than read about military uniforms!

I know I gripe about the price of certain GW items, but this book is reasonably priced in my opinion. Just coz GW aren\'t giving it away that makes them the spawn of Satan I guess!

tbh im basing my argument on:

WD: £4 and 140ish pages
This GD Book: £6 and 44 pages

WD is magazine quality pages i know but still things like their collectors guides are cheaper for a lot more pages.

As for not having room in WD...if they stopped congratulating themselves for page after page and and cut out the LOTR bollocks and didn\'t advertise GW stuff so heavily...they\'d have bugger all to print so they could EASILY do a special GD White Dwarf issue without trying to rip the poor punters out of their pocket money TWICE.

Comparing it to the CMON book is not valid either, because the CMON book is not just a glossy advertsing pamphlet.

I flicked through it in WH Smiths the other day and went and bought a \'Big Issue\' from the guy outside, just as a matter of principle.

I like it, all I ever look at in WD is the painting spreads anyway now days, so to me the cost is getting me a lot more pictures and less crap and now I don\'t need to subscribe to WD . Seems win-win to me.

So, GW is basically making a ton of profit off of pieces they didn\'t even comission or pay for! And $12 for a measely 44 pages! No thank you, I\'ll just go online and find the pics for free if I need to see them that badly.

I didn\'t know they charged for the whole affair these days mind, entry and all. That IS a shitter.

I just find myself drawn to glossy miniature-strewn books, so £6 ain\'t so bad to me especially as all my purchases tend to be second-hand ebay jobs nowadays. Point being, £6 is easy cash...but that\'s relative

We seem to have a good range of opinions on this subject.

I must admit that I probably will buy it, for the main reason that I find it essential reading for finding out the quality of recent GD winners, what the judges are looking for etc.

Like stef686 said, it seems ridiculous that the booklet now costs 50% more than the magazine it used to be given away with

Thing is, I see the WD coverage as part of the prize for winning at GD. I feel the competition has been cheapened somewhat by only showing the models in a separate booklet.

I welcome the more indepth approach that the bigger booklet will be able to provide, but I really don\'t agree that their wasn\'t room in WD for this
