The \"How to paint Space Marines\" book has a short guide but it\'s really designed for getting minis on the table as fast as possible. Could check that out in the store without buying it 
Otherwise just check other peoples work! I\'m currently working on designing my own SM scheme since most people seem to paint Ultramarines and the more popular chapters.
I\'m aiming for a really dark purple tone! w00t hopefully gonna add some Japanese style to them since I live in Japan and all!

Having painted a few Ultramarines for a kid at my gaming club I can give a couple good pointers. Ultramarine blue waters down really nicely, adheres well after and only takes 3-4 coats to get a good coverage. Prime black and work up your blue in layers. Leave the lines of the armor black and make sure your layers of blue get successively smaller to show depth. After you finish with your blue you can ink it if you feel like it (again water it down alot, and afterwards make sure you reapply a highlight of your ultramarine blue again). Enchanted blue is a good edge highlight. For the golds base with shining gold and then add a little mithral silver for the final highlight. Use blood red for the eyes, and put a highlight of blazing orange along the bottomish of the eye, and a dot of white in the corner. I think that kinda covers the basics. When i did a load of ultramarines i used the following:
Black, black/regal blue, regal blue/ultramarine blue,
highlights:
Ultramarine blue and to finish off ultramarine blue/space wolves grey.

Hope this helps.@ The Cadian - I believe emo means that by doing several thinned layers of Ultramarines blue over a basecoat of black, you can achieve a good level of shading without using different colours - but all these methods depend on how light or dark you want your ultramarines to BE...
I tend to have my base troops a darker blue, with characters a lighter blue. I also have my librarians extra light blue as they are meant to be blue by default (Codex colours)

When you look at the armor you can see that there are lines engraved into it. They form the sections of each plate of the armor. You want to leave these lines black, so that all the plates are seperated by a thin black line (known as black lining). When I say make your layers successively smaller I mean the first layer or blue would cover 100% of the armor plate, then the next layer would cover about 80% of the uppermost part of the plate, then the next layer would cover about 60% of the very highest points of the armor. Because the blue is thinned down the black undercoat will show through slightly, so the basic effect works like this. The first layer is blue, but darker because it has the most black showing through. The second layer is brighter than the first because it is painted on top, so less black shows through from the first layer. And finally the last layer is the brightest (usually it is the same as the pure colour you are painting) because no more black is showing through. I hope this makes more sense.
hakoMikes technique will also work very well (as you can see from the result), I did not suggest it because I have had previous problems with priming white.

Personally i would use a regal blue/black mix to use for black lining ultramarines.
I suppose it all depends how long you want to be spend painting your marines.
