Ultramarine Terminator

Can\'t escape them it seems :) Bit of a personal project really, just having a bit of fun. Really want to get the blues as good as I can (or until I get bored - whichever one comes first ;) ).

WIP3montage.jpg

Main thing is the contrast I want between the base colours and the blues of the marine. Not happy with the base at the moment, but can\'t really continue with it until I\'ve got further with the figure himself. Still, the colours are in the right ball-park, although I want much more orange and red to show through - and with some judicious use of weathering powders (well, artist pastels - I\'m cheap ;) ), I hope we\'ll get there. Excuse the photo though, it\'s been compressed slightly too much, and I\'m way too tired to correct it!

I\'m just wondering one thing: All of your latest projects have involved desert scenes.
is this like a contrast thing or what?
Any way, absolutely great blue work so far can\'t wait too see it done.

It\'s definitely a contrast idea, but there\'s a far longer game plan in operation (although chances are it\'ll not get off the ground for years ;) ) - I have a large-scale project in mind, involving a desert scene, and it really a case of me finding a colour combo which I\'m happy with :) Not happy yet, but we\'ll get there!

UH-HUH! I knew it!
I was originally gonna ask if the terminator was gonna be stalking that tau you painted a while a go. I can\'t help but be interested now, even if it might take a while

Bit more:

Still haven\'t decided on the claws yet - experimenting with the turquoise colour mixed with metals, but still need to think on that. Another slight risk is the gem effect on the legs and arms - not realistic in the slightest, but it feels as if it suits UMs!

Opinions please -

Been experimenting with the claws, so haven\'t really tidied up yet, but how does this lightening effect work out?

At the moment, there\'s a bit too much lighting, but I think it could work out?

I\'m diggin\' the claws. Really cool idea and executed well.

The base and armor looks great too. Super smooth.

Well, I\'m going to give it another go - I kind of like the idea, but I think it needs some refinement, so I\'ve stripped it back and we\'ll try it again.

Uhm... I know we are in the WIP section, but I just cannot look at these new termies right without something...the HEAD!

I keep staring at the socket where a head should be and focusing on that. Even if not painted or decided which one you are going to use, could you get a pic with a head siting in the socket just to get an idea of what it all will look like shape wise, so I can pay more attention to the details where the empty socket is coming in the picture, while waiting for the head to be painted?

Those claws are pretty nice. Kinda looks like light reflecting off ocean waves.

I\'ll bung on a head for the next main shot!

Anyhoo, been tinkering with the claws - I think it\'s better this time, but still needs more work:

The blues look really nice and the new high-contrast claws look great.

Makes the Ultramarine I\'ve been playing with come over all sad ;)

the base is a very nice contrast with the blue. I like it allot. I also like the idea you got going on the claws but in my opinion you have overdone it a little bit.
Ill follow this threat

Good call changing the claws from blue to black/turquoise. I was gonna suggest something along those lines but then I kept scrolling and felt entirely vindicated :)

Overall looks great, it\'s nice to see well done Ultramarines that aren\'t in the famous Brokenblade scheme :p Just remember to find some way to include white in the color scheme, it wouldn\'t be proper 1st company without it (and Ultras really are sticklers for details)...

:) - I\'ll get the white in there somewhere!

Update is that the head is on...and is a bit of a compromise between fully helmeted and fleshy head. Mainly because in the interim I managed to get through 3 plastic helmets and ruin them by way of snipping the things in the wrong place (who thought to put the \'cut here\' bits on those very tiny vent things on the top??? That and a bit of odd conversion work which didn\'t gel let me to this one. Which I\'m fairly happy with.

very nicely painted, good smooth blends.

i just think the mini is pretty tame, not much going on any of the surfaces.
a great mini, it just lacks something to focus and attract my eye.

I like this guy, too! The blue is great and I like the slightly unusual head on this terminator.

About what Mourner said about the focal point: I noticed he is missing his crux terminatus on the left shoulder! It might be a little bit late now, but sculpting it there or maybe changing that section so that he has one and then painting that thing in prominent colours might give a little focal point. The other pad needs the ultramarine horseshoe, I guess when that\'ll be there, it might look more interesting, too. :)

Another idea: Maybe a roman number on the left knee, for identification purposes inside his squad? Done in white or red, something that sticks out a bit?

However, apart from that, your blue is spectacular and I want to be able to paint like that sometime in the future. ;)

Cheers,
Witzkatz

Hey guys, don\'t rush me! ;) !

It\'s in WIP because it\'s just that!

Shoulder pads aren\'t on yet, and I haven\'t even begun doing liturgies and symbols.

Get the basics done first and then the little bits :D
