Ultramarines Captain - Finished?

A buddy of mine sent me a pile o\' marine bits as part of our commission agreement and I went straight to town with them.

Not a lot of heavy conversion on this one - but a fun combination of the existing GW pieces. Only the shoulders, with the raised pauldron edging, are custon. First round of highlighting and the light blue detailing so that I could match the paint. Lots of shading to go and a touch of highlighting on the armour at this point.

Lots more to come - and I would, of course, love any feedback.

Does anyone think that I need to go all the way to white (or gray) on the devotional text on his armour? How about on the \"rays\" on his knee?

Thanks in advance for the feedback.

I like the stance on this guy. Could be very charaterful. are you doing a bare head. I think it would look better.

I agree, the pose is very dynamic. The only thing I would say would be to go over the Ultramarines symbol on his chest and knee again - they seem a little uneven at the mo, unless you haven\'t finished them yet?

As for the rays, I would leave them subtle in the colour you have now, maybe paint a really thin line of lighter blue on the edges to make it pop out a little more and make it look more intentional.

White, gray or blue text ...??? I would prefer thin white text, but then a litttle less of it on the armour. It really depends on your personal preference.

Great looking conversion, solid paint job so far.
Looking forward to see it finished. ;)

From the pose - to me - it looks like he\'s rescued the colours (The flag) from a dead banner bearer and might be fending off an attack with a raised sword...

So I would do him very battle-damaged and weary-looking :p

I had originally planned on doing this guy just the way DaN suggests - battle worn, damaged, and picking up the banner from a dead comrade. But then I made the mistake of asking for input -- and now I will probably make TWO of these guys.

This one, before the battle, bare head held high ordering the charge.

The other damaged, head down, banner in one hand and leaning on his sword after the battle.

@Mooseman: yup, still a ways to go on the UM icons, no worries. Thin line of lighter blue on the rays - hmm, I agree.Thank you.

So far everyone agrees on white text - I want a LOT of it though so we\'ll see how it works out. Going white over the two shades of blue there now (yup, 2) will make it stand out well too I think.

@Ogrebane: yup, head is bare and has laurels. It\'s the unidentifiable bit on a stick in the last photo.

Thanks for the feedback folks - updates as I get to \'em.

First round of highlighting finished - though it\'s hard to see in the photos. Not really happy with the face although the stubble (not in the picture) is great. I think that the wee tiny lettering on the cloak turned out reasonably well.

I also changed from the pointing hand to my original idea of holding his sword to the ground.

Nice Idea

I really like the Idea here,

I woulds have perhaps used a power sword to a chain sword and sculpted a hand to rest on the hilt, but hey just an opinion,

wanna see the banner painted now!!

Still a long, long way to go but I\'m happy with the progress. I redid his face but the highlights on his face look freakish in the photo though so I\'m going to re-examine that. Considering another highlight on the cloak lining text - and there\'s more to come on the outside of the cloak.

Feedback always appreciated.

Came a lil late on this WIP, I\'m not much for pristine SM\'s, but something about his pose seems odd... maybe its too late now, or maybe its just me. It seems like maybe he\'s extended out to far to be kneeling? Hmmm, idk, it just bothers me cuz I want to tip him over! and take his cape. Nice cape

I still feel like I have a long, long way to go on this guy -- and a lot of clean-up to do now - but overall I\'m pretty pleased with the progress.

I would, of course, welcome any feedback.

Well, I\'d like to think I\'m finished with this piece... but there are still a bunch of little things I don\'t like. Of course the more you dicker with the details the more likely you are to totally screw everything up. So I\'m desperately trying to leave this guy alone now.

Any final feedback for me?
