Ultramarines - Sternguard Squad

Hi Folks,

Here's my latest offering - a squad of five Ultramarine Sternguard. My aim with these was to try and introduce some different techniques, such as blending the white on the helmets and having some minor scratches and dinks in the armour.

Any comments are grateful.

Cheers,

Here's a few closer shots. Yup, the sight and bolter was bent on the marine on the far left - I tried some adjustment but I didn't want the thing to snap off.

Ditto, I think the checkered knees are wonderfully old school. Reminds me of how Ultramarines used to be decorated. The blending on the helmets looks good. Did you carry the technique over when you painted the shoulder pad rims? Overall, very clean job. One suggestion: you might want to make the dinks in the armor a little bigger next time while making less of them. It might produce a better effect that can be seen at a distance, plus it will allow you to better utilize underline highlighting.

I like them, they are well done.
If you'll accept my advice you should brighten up those requiem. it seems that they are "too black" try to use a dark gray instead of pure black, than highlight them on the edges with a lighter tone. You should also highlight a bit the slings of the guns, they look like if they are plain brown.
One last thing before you'll punch me in the face, try to blend a bit the metallics on the weapons, there's too clean separation between the base dark metal and the lighter on the edges.

As I've said before I think it's a good job.

Thanks for taking the time to critique the squad. I consider these to be my best work so far but it's nice to see that there's still a lot of areas in which I can improve.

GTherk; I think that I'll try limiting the amount of scratches and have them across wider areas - thanks for the tip!

ArgoMina; I think that it's obvious that I've only used the blending techniques on the helmets and it makes the edge highlighting areas look flatter. I'll give a go on blending the highlights on the metallics and the bolter straps. Thanks again!

Yep, looking really good, even in the EXTREME CLOSEUPS. Which is not an easy feat.

Plus, I really like your avatar.
