Ultramrine Captain WIP

I was bought a Cato Sicarius model for xmas, and as it was a gift, wanted to paint it up for a little project. The model is however so I found some excellent inspiration online and wanted to make a more dynamic Ultramarine captain.

I have a lot of blood angel bits around the place so I used them to create some artificer style armour, and everyone these days seems to have wrist mounted bolters/bolt pistols so why should Ultramrines Captain's be left out? I will sculpt away most of the 'I'm a Blood Angel so my armour must look like biiiig muscles' elements later, as well as add a billowing cloak. Or perhaps even a Jump Pack!

Still not entirely happy with the pose, I shall try and rotate the torso a bit more but I have to cut more away from the legs to do this.

Whatever people say about the moulding quality of finecast (I had to replace the vents on the backpack with plastic ones and will have to fill in some warped bits) I was very impressed with how easy it is to model with, as this is the first time I have really tested the stuff out.

Any feedback or suggestions very welcome!

I really like want you are trying to do with this model but I see what you mean about the pose. This is just a suggestion but what if you brought the sword down the pistol arm up and put his face facing a little bit more forward that might help the pose, but its all in what you are trying to do.

Hi Knightwatch,

Really interested to see how this plays out. I've been playing with Ultramarine paint schemes these last couple of days alongside my main project. Cannot get comfortable with my base colour and am keen to see where you start out. I went Regal blue which is very dark and am not sure if this is just my pot or the general tone.

Keep it up, got any updates?

Cheers

Thinking on the pose. Try to rotate the upper body forward from the waist, if you can that kilt thingie looks like it may be in the way. I'd look at throwing the bolter arm back and out from the body a tad more. At full extent the arm should be behind the leg and not parallel. Oh and if your really feeling jumpy ipen the trailing hand up :smile-big:

Excellent job so far, keep it up!

Progress, I've sorted the pose to be a bit more sensible by cutting away the Ultramarine Kilt thing to re-attach at a later date so i can twist the torso further. Thus extra twist has made me happier.

Agree, really good. May I make a suggestion re the powersword. Ultramarines design pulls in a lot of roman influences. I'd suggest trying to make a gladius style blade for authenticity? Looking really good all the same!!!!

Following on from a horrendously busy time at work including new instructors and promotion interviews, I have made some sigificant progress!

I was getting concerned that as the model was mostly made from Blood Angel components, he was starting to look rather unlike an Ultramarine, so I decided to push some more Roman influences in there. I'm really happy with the Gladius sword, but I'm not so sure about the Centurion crested helmet. It looks cool but it de-humanizes the mini. I also added a cloak made from greenstuff over a milliput base which I am particularly proud of.

All in all I'm pretty happy with how the project is progressing to be honest! Cheers all!

Woah, looks good man. Cutting that U symbol for the left shoulder plate must've been tricky.
