Undercoating

Can you undercoat your model withous using a spray primer, if how. Could you just use say chaos black and paint it over the model. All comments welcome.

Chaos black works really well. Thin it though with water. Several thin coats to completely cover the metal is better than one thick one that will hide details.

Skull white is fine too.

I use spray and touch up the missed bits with a brush.

Painting it on is good. Mix some detergent in the paint it helps it get into the tight bits.

strictly speaking neither of those is an undercoat/primer
GW: Smelly Primer
Vallejo: Foundation White
I add a little black to make a grey primer, also, it shows up any blemishes or mould lines you may have missed during the clean-up far better than either black or white

I used smelly primer on my last mini, and it wasn\'t that bad at all. Thinned 1:1 with water made it quite decent. But you must thin it, lest it does what Klute says, and fills in details.

After either spraying or brushing a white undercoat on, I wash it with a very thin black. This fills in the shadowed areas (which is the primary advantage of using black) and picks out the mould lines.

I undercoat in Citadel (GW) acrylics using a brush and lightly watered paint. I choose black, white or grey paint depending on the brightness I want in the finished item. Black is my preference for 28mm figures, white or grey for 54mm and upwards.

Sprays are better simply because they are harder wearing (I\'m pretty sure the GW sprays are enamals). You can undercoat with any black, white or grey acrylic model paint, but spray undercoats are better IMHO.

Spray may be better but Ive had alot of trouble with them lately so Ive gone back to painting it on.

Yes, but the correct question is, \"Should I?\"

Good primers provide much better adhesion to metal, resin or plastic than almost any normal paint.

This doesn\'t have to cost much - what I use is simply grey automotive primer.

So I gather the consensus is yes you can use non-spray primers. Is there some special kind of brush-on primer or do you guys just use your std white/gray/black paints as a primer?

Seems that isn\'t really a primer then, but I sprayed my minis and need to touch up the areas I missed.

What Einion said is very true.
Also the cost of Spray Primer is a lot cheaper then buying dozens of pots of Chaos Black, as one of my mates has just realised.
Also if your are lazy (like me) spraying is the way to go, especially for big models or large number of models

Isn\'t Chaos Black Spray Primer a different sort of paint as normal Chaos Black aswell? I heard thats why its thinner and smoothe.

yeh the chaos black spray is thinner... im just sayin you can get cheap stuff for like 5$ that works the same if not better... the self etching stuff i have actualy takes off the left over oils and stuff on the metal to stick better and what not just need to be careful on plastics with it :bouncy:

Be careful ! if you live in a high humidity area spray is not the way to go...many efforts and many poor results...
I use thinned Vallejo\'s paint on primer white i know where it is going and what to expect.

Priming minis

Just on this topic.

I\'ve heard of people thinning down for example Vallejo Primer White and using an airbrush to apply it to the mini.

I\'ve never tried this but was curious if any of you great CMoN d00ds had. *??*

If so, what are the results like?

I\'ve never had any trouble with spray on primers. Tamiya \'Fine Surface Primer\' White or Grey is great and goes on very smoothly.
I think it would take up too much time to paint on the prime coat and that there would be little to no advantage when compared to just spray priming your mini.

Isn\'t that the truth! Up here in Seattle in the winter, it\'s really a bad idea to spray prime--I can never get consistent results. In summer, I can usually manage to get good spray undercoats with Rustoleum Sandable Primer, but not in the \"rainy season\" here (which means I get like 6 weeks when I can spray prime ).

VMC Foundation White is really good stuff, too.

Recently, though, I\'ve started playing with black primers again, and that\'s a bit harder to find in brush-on. I have, however, found that Folk Art Glass & Tile Medium (thinned 1:1 with water) with a drop of VMC Black in it makes a really bitchin\' black brush-on primer.

I guess a lot of people over at the mini-painting Yahoo group use this stuff as primer and top-coat sealant. So far, I\'m pretty impressed with its primer-ing (???) capabilities, but haven\'t tried it as a top-coat.
