Cmon!! Its very amusing!! I think the joke is a good one. No different than a Lawyer joke, or a Catholic Priest joke. In good taste? Definately not. But, just imagine a pompous professor (his personal beliefs aside) trying to prove his point, and a no-nonsense military guy ringing his bell. Its absurd.

Real violence is not funny, except when an old lady beats the hell out of a purse snatching criminal with her umbrella....then its hilarious!!

Not voting shows only that the elector in question has not the inclination, desire, nor interest in participation. A more valid method of telling the parties that none of them are worth a darn is the spoiling of the ballot (something I\'ve done myself many times).
Spoiling the ballot???
What, you urinate on it?

Casting your ballot with no boxes ticked, multiple boxes ticked, ticked incorrectly, writing on the ballot \'Is this a Joke\', etc... Anything that makes the ballot not count. Urine may work if it suitibly made the ballot illedgible or unclear.

Sorry Jim, I still don\'t see it as either funny or a joke

Don\'t get me wrong one of my favourite sayings is \"tragedy is when I cut my finger, comedy is when YOU fall down a hole and die\"
I am also NOT saying this isn\'t funny because it is wrong. I am simply saying I don\'t see a \"joke\" anywhere in that story. There is no tag line, there is noone acting up in an absurd manner, there is no juxtaposition of theoretical pyschological archtypes so it just doesn\'t seem to form an actual amusing factor of any sort to me.

If that\'s what you feel you face, you may not want to go that way. Some feel by not voting they are affecting the major parties by pushing them more moderate - this is the Minnesota theory. Both parties were too extreme so all those people who\'d never voted before voted for Jesse Ventura.

Didn\'t half of America cast a protest ballot at the last election then. After all the Joke candidate got voted in! :innocent:

Maybe, but I\'m STILL laughing at the guy who didn\'t win.

TBS, has anyone asked for an apology? I noticed one post saying it shouldn\'t be here, but I don\'t think the majority of us are asking for an apology, just weighing in on the issue. For my own part I honestly don\'t see how the story could be taken as anything but an attack, and I don\'t see how the humor could work without buying into some of the assumptions of that attack. If that\'s your outlook, then so be it, no apologies necessary, but I for one do disagree. That\'s putting it mildly.

Thanks for the many positive comments from several of you. Here\'s hoping I don\'t destroy the goodwill with the rest of my post.

For my own part, I never worry about radical left, right, or middle of the road; I try to take each issue in its own terrms Sometimes that lands me on the extreme left and sometimes in the middle of the road. Can\'t say, I end up on the right too often. But I don\'t see much percentage in aiming for any particular balance on the issue.

On the ACLU, I think they are wrong about a few thigs, and the NAMBLA case(s) may well be one of them. When people argue the actual cases against the actual position the ACLU has taken on them, I can respect that. What I can\'t stomach is deliberate misrepresentation, which is part of what this piece of spam is all about.

On the issue of God on the money, in the pledge, etc. I\'m afraid to say I am one of those who is not particularly accomodating. Frankly, I don\'t see accommodation as the issue. The question isn\'t one of being polite to those who disagree; it\'s a very direct question of whether or not any given piece of religious symbolism constitutes an impermissible establishment of religion. If the answer to that question is \'yes,\' then they ought to go. If it\'s \'no,\' then they ought to be allowed by the government at least. Accomodating one another as a kind of general courtesy just doesn\'t enter into it.

I would add that the currrent rationale on things like the Pledge, the 10 Commandments, God on the money, etc. is really bizarre. Time and again we are told these are there only to acknowledge an important historical fact. If that is all it is, then Pledging Allegience to one nation, UNDER GOD, is quite literally taking his name in vain. It is quite literally pretending to talk to God in order to do something else. So is the reference to God on the money, and so are the many applications of the 10 Commandments. If these are simply about history, then every time people invoke God\'s name as a means of merely acknowledging history, then they are quite literally violating one of his commandments (to say nothing of a very clear Biblical injunction from Jesus to keep one\'s prayers private).

It\'s frustrating to see accommodation to such measures taken as a gesture of good faith to Christians when that gesture itself is demanded in such poor faith. And I can\'t help but wish that many of the believers who keep demanding these accommodations would take their own faith more seriously. I don\'t personally want Christians to be less militant about their faith. On this issue more than any others, I want them to take their faith more seriously. ...and to think twice about whether all these half-hearted invocations and convoluted legal arguments might reflect as poorly on their own faith just as they do on our legal system.

Yeesh....when you say it like that, it isn\'t all that funny I guess.

How about this one....

Guy walks into a bar.

OUCH.

See this is the part where I have to confess that I don\'t get your side of the discussion. I don\'t mean the part where I explicitly disagree; I mean the part where I honestly can\'t fathom your perception of the joke. That you could consider the joke absurd and still find it funny. To me the joke rests on some agreement with the stereotypes in question. Not believing those stereotypes, I don\'t find it funny.

It reminds me of the time a friend cracked a joke about Indians being lazy. Having lived and worked on a reservation, and having long since ceased to think of them in terms of that stereotype, I just didn\'t find it funny. It\'s not that I made a PC decision to just oppose any ethnic humor, the joke simply had no ground under it for me. It\'s a similar deal here. I look at this joke, and I see nothing that rings true for me, and so the punch line falls flat.

Just because I stated I didn\'t feel the NEED to apologise, it doesnt\' mean I read there was a demand for one!
I would seem you\'d better hold on tight up there, I wouldn\'t want you to hurt yourself if you fall.

Honestly, I really don\'t think I have a side, or actually even much of a point. I just like prodding. Not quite the devil\'s advocate, as that may be offensive to non-religious types....

Like I said before, the joke is funny BECAUSE it is absurd. I am not saying falling on the floor funny, but funny as in clever. I apologize for people that take it at face value, they can\'t help it. I know better.

But regardless of what the mans religion was (or lack of religion) was. The fact that the pompous \'know it all\' professor was one upped by the salt of the earth \'regular\' guy.

Would it have been a better joke if the Professor said \"let Satan strike me down if he is real\" Then a 7 year old boy smacks him in the head with a chair and when the professor comes to the boy says \"the devil made me do it?\"

(actually that is pretty good....)
lol

Actually TBS, I didn\'t suggest that you had read such a demand into the posts. I asked you if there had been one (because I didn\'t know if I\'d missed one) and said that I didn\'t think the majority of us had made one. Is the rest of your post really necessary?

Interesting, that does make it an entirely different sort of joke at any rate. ...unless of course you meant to malign the character of 7 year olds. If that is how the original gag reads to you, then this does help me see it a little more clearly. To me it reads more like a Chick Tract without the pictures, but I can at least see another possibility now.

Thank you.

The problem I have with the original joke is that to me it\'s not \"average joe gets one over the professor\" it\'s \"bully punches geek in the head\". Your new example is amusing because you have a weaker person doing the hitting (so it actually is a juxtapostion of norms) plus the \"devil made me do it\" phrase is something a 7 year old might say.

If the guy had put the professor down through showing his belief to be stupid or outwitted him into embarrasment that would be average joe gets one over (oh er sounds abit rude!)

You mean like this:

Professor if English is lecturing on various word phrases and explains how the double negative generally means the positive but the double positive never means the negative.
Then the student in the first row cries out: \"yeah, right.\"

Hmmm. That doesn\'t type as well as it sounds.
