Using different types of black

Okay, so I\'m painting Grey Knights and so far I\'ve used blu-greys in highlighting some of the blacks (on the shoulder pad heraldry and flexible joint areas). However I was wondering whether to go with something different, perhaps the fleshtone type highlights as described by Ritual in another thread, for the ammunition belt. Would that look odd?

I sometimes think that the flesh addition for black highlights is a little soft and more effective as rendered cloth.

You see, that\'s what I couldn\'t decide, whether the ammunition belt would be softer. Probably not soft enough, I suppose, though.

if you are intending that it should look like leather then use some browns to show scuffs & strain marks and wash back with thinned black.

Hmm, I\'m not sure about leather. I guess I\'ll just go for the blue-greys. Keep it simple. Thanks for the input, Mike.

Black\'s an odd duck in that the highlights can be almost anything. The trick is to get a good smooth blend from highlight into total black.

adding a touch of brown or blue into the darkest shades can add depth with black.

The trick with black is to always have a tone to it that fits the mood of the miniature whether it is warm or cold. I have tried the same kind of brownish black that Danilo Cartacci uses with the same colour Ritual do and it works great as well. Otherwise is Rotting flesh an excellent colour for highlighting black.

Don\'t undersestimate the power of inks to provide nich depth to black....

I agree with all the points said.. so far particularly Svens on the mood .Ice blue works well with black as a highlight colour to give sharp \"cold\" highlighting..
I am looking at a lot of historical stuff a lately and th lack painting in his particular field is so far ahead of what we generally see in the fantasy world...

I think Andrea\'s newest black paint set has about 12 shades in it or something mad ut I guess at the end of the day it does make sense......

Yes, I\'ve got them bit of a waste of money to tell you the truth I should of got some good vallejo :no:

I maybe should have added that the recipe is black + german camo black brown and then add Vallejo Flat flesh (IIRC). But it really works with most neutral flesh tones.

Sorry to jump on the post like this but when adding fesh colours to black for blending/highlighting what sort of mix and how many stages would you guys generally use? eg: 5 shades starting with black, then 2:1 mix Black/Rotting Flesh
etc etc

I never though to use colors to mix into black for shading! I dont like using greys they tend to stick out way to much
