Try putting some paint around the hole you want to put the pin in. Whil its still wet position it onto the figure. Now you have a template as to where to place the second hole.

Hope that helps,

I haven\'t actually done any pinning, but my old Eavy Metal painting guide (ca 1992) says to cut pins that are way too short but still stick out a bit, then put them in the holes on one piece. Next put paint on the short ends of the pins sticking out and apply the place where it should go while the paint is wet. Take it away and you have dots of paint matched exactly to where pins would go. Drill there then replace the short pins with ones that are long enough to do the job.

I knew i could count on you!! Shaz i tried that, but the joint wasn\'t smooth ... which, to cut a long story short, is why i said the torso is practically hollowed out ...
Vincegamer ... the musical voice of wise experience .... i\'ll just go and do what you said RIGHT NOW!!!!

thanks again!!!

I glue (zap-a-gap) the parts together, then from a NOT obvious angle, drill both parts at the same time.

Make sure that the pin length is less than the depth of the hole (countersunk). Put the pin in the hole followed by a drop of thin CA - it will wick the length of the pin and make the joint STRONG. Let cure.

Take a little putty (greenstuff, whitestuff, milliput, etc.) and fill the little bit of hole. Prime & paint.

If it is a large part and I am using a large diameter pin (use different pin diameters for different part weights) - I may do as above with a small drill, them enlarge the holes with the appropriate drill, leaving only a small hole to fill.

Clear as mud?

Yep, airhead, that\'s the ticket! Usually i pin the usual way, but for the GW Tyranid Biovore I HAD to use your way... I mean, four legs with round joints suspending the torso... and I just couldn\'t glue all four legs at the same time without them being uneven or spread off the base. So I just drilled through the shoulders and hip... some CA- done!

Personally, I always hollow out each mating part much more than needed then fill both holes with putty (any kind; gs, milliput, whatever) before inserting an undersized pin (coated in a little superglue) in one cavity then pressing it into the other; trimming-off any excess later after it has set.
No need to match-up holes and the bond is always precicse and strong. :)
