Using raw materials on bases.

Heya,

I see a lot of people using bits of twig, dried branches etc on their mini bases these days. I was just wondering how long these bases will last, I mean as wood does rot and decompose how would you go about preserving it?

If your doing a commission for someone, I'm sure the person paying for the commission wouldn't want their lovely miniature's base falling apart after a few months / years.

Thoughts on the matter would be awesome!

Yes, but indoors in a typical domestic environment?

The organic materials that need to be used with care are things like lichen and moss, which will dry out over time if they're not preserved in some way (e.g. using glycerine). Even when stabilised, given enough time and exposure to light they will tend to change colour or fade, so painting or colouring them is advisable for them to remain the same colour.

There's no absolute guarantee that there won't be any changes over time anyway - think about it, there's no thought given to which inks and hobby paints are completely lightfast, how any glues might age etc. etc.

And local storage conditions will play a huge part, anyone living where it's very hot and dry part of the year won't have the same experiences as another person living where it's cold and damp, or very hot and humid.
