Using Vallejo Metallic Medium

Greetings all:

I just ordered some Vallejo metallic medium, as I\'m keen on trying to get colorful metallic paints. Indeed, I rarely use metallics because I started out doing NMM and haven\'t done much else. I\'m curious, however, about how to actually use the metallic medium. Since most of the Vallejo paints are opaque, even when heavily diluted, wouldn\'t the metal flakes simply be covered up? So doesn\'t that mean one can only use transparent inks with this medium?

Is anyone out there using this stuff? And more to the point, can anyone indicate how they\'ve used it successfully? Thanks.

(I suppose the same question applies to iridescent medium. I\'ve got some from Liquitex but I\'ve only used it as a glaze so far.)

actually i find the metallic medium to be more of a pearlesent than metallic.

it gives a shimmery sheen to it. i haven\'t tried to use it for metals.

It\'s cool!

I\'ve used the Vallejo metallic medium, and all I can say is that it\'s pretty cool. You can add it to any paint (I suppose--haven\'t tried adding it to inks), and it will add a pearlescent sheen to it. It does thin it down just a bit, but not so much that it becomes an ink. Since Vallejos need thinning anyway, this is not a bad thing; you just won\'t need to thin much more.

There is also a little blurb about how to use it on Vallejo\'s site, in the Auxilary section. Basically, it says that you can use it as an additive (which will produce a slightly lighter, pearlescent color) or as a top glaze (producing a silk finish).

Sorry I don\'t have any pictures right now. Midterms are coming up, so painting is on the back burner.... :(
